Hi

I'm looking to start down the route of basic studio work but have limited space.
I would like to start with a back drop kit before venturing into studio lighting! I have two flash guns already so can do some creative work.

I've been looking on eBay and I'm not sure which is the best material or colours?

What would you recommend?

white paper and black cloth or velvet. And then a darkish mid-grey. Nowt else really. :)

I wouldn't mind a backdrop but when I was looking a while back I wasn't sure what to get really. Could you link to something you are looking at so I can get an idea?

Thanks

I got white paper then a week later got grey vinyl. I shoot most on the grey so far but that suits my style.

What do people use for stands etc? What about the roll that you see in studios which goes along the floor also to give a seamless background (I assume that's vinyl?)

I use a mix of things, most recently I've been working in smaller spaces as I take the studio to peoples homes so I use a Lastolite 1.8m popup white/black background that works great as I can change styles in a couple of seconds..... downside it's not cheap. The simplest is a background stand (£40 on eBay I think) and white sheet (or any other colour) long enough to do what you want.

If only one I'd go grey, you can blow it out for white and low light it for black, it's 3 fer sorta.

Get one of the wall mounted 3 roller backgrounds and just hook up a white, mid-grey and whatever bg you think you might get a LOT of use out of.

Bear in mind you can light a white bg with gels and have it any flat colour you like, and the grey can go from white to black easily. So make that third one that you really cannot achieve with gels and one that you really want.

I've seen a good video tutorial on line about using a grey back ground, it's definitely an option!

I've not seen these wall mounted rollers. What material do they use?

Oh gels are on my 'to purchase' list!

Just google 'wall mount background support system' and you should find loads of them. They are VERY useful and are raised and lowered by chains. Pretty cheap too considering what you get.
