Looking for a lens which will cover roughly 18-50 with IS and at 2.8. The canon is out of my price range, which leaves the Tamron and the Sigma?

I heard the Tamrons non stabalised lens is good, not so much their stabalised version - but I need the IS for video really.

How does the sigma cope with video?

Cheers.

Just a comment about something else regarding IS...

Premiere pro CS6 has included "warp stabilizer" effect that stabilizes the shot, it is incredible and when coupled with a stabilised lens will open up new doors to all that edit with premiere pro!

Sorry I don't have experience of the sigma but reviews look good and have heard from a couple of users that it is sharp (and sigma OS is always pretty good).

Yeah I'm subscribed to Adobe Cloud so have access to all of adobes products and the stabilizer ineed seems to work very well.

It should be okay however to use this on non stabalised lenses I'm sure..?

Yes but I would use it to stabilize further or to assist in movement which does really well to provide a crane like / steadicam look but due to it cropping your image (sometimes quite heavily) I wouldn't rely on it with a non IS lens.

Use the stabilizer in addition, not in place of in other words :)

Yeah, I understand. Kind of in an awkward situation really as I want an IS zoom but don't really have many options.

Canon 17-55 IS 2.8: A bit out of my price range
Tamron 17-50 VC 2.8 : Heard bad review on it, apparently soft - not sharp
Tamron 17-50 non-VC 2.8: No VC :( but sharp
Sigma 17-50 2.8 OS: Being only £200 cheper than the Canon I'd rather save for the Canon

HELP.. :gag:

Any particular reason that you want an f/2.8 for video? In reality the number of times that you'll shoot that wide is tiny which makes something like the 24-105/4 a far more practical lens.

Fair point to be honest. Slightly concerned that its not as wide as I'd like but I guess I have the tokina for the wide shots...

Now that I think about it...why do you need IS for video?

I am always on a tripod, monopod or other stability tool...?

For the type of video stuff I do I am handheld a lot of the time, even with a shoulder rig I think a lens with IS would help.

I think he was referring to a wide aperture not focal length...?

Yeah I know. I was just pointing out that I think the wide side of that may not be wide enough for my needs seeing as I'll be on a crop body.
