Hi my son has been using a trial version Adobe after effects but it is too expensive and I am sure he hardly uses all the features. He likes doing stop motion and adding after effects is there a cheaper software that can do this and is cheaper than the £900? more around 10% of the cost would be good :)

Does your son qualify for the student version?

He is in secondary school so I assume so, would he get this from the school?

That includes Premiere Pro and Photoshop amongst others so a total bargain at that price. Just check the small print to make sure he qualifies before you buy.

Agree, never really got on with premiere pro but Vegas is just so easy to use

After Effects is a great software for digital compositing, stop motion animation, motion graphics , etc.. (more complicated visual effects) therefore it comes at a price.

Sony Vegas is a video editing software with little visual effects capabilities which delivers a much more faster and easier to use user interface.Very good for beginners.

Depending on what effects your son wants to add to his videos would probably help you with your decision. I can recommend the Adobe Creative Cloud as an option too.

What this does basically is that they loan you the software at a cheaper subscription price on a monthly basis. But if you are planning to hold onto the software for a few years (Although Adobe constantly updates the software every year, it doesn't completely go out of date and will still be usable) just get him the Education version and treat it like an education investmentfor him. :)

Are you serious? Vegas pro is one of the most versatile pieces of editing software out there, used by some prolific film makers.

After Effects is a hell of a lot more powerful for adding in-depth effects, I've never got on with Vegas pro.

I've always just used free software for stop motion, it's one of the most basic kinds of animation.

The student edition of CS6 Production Premium is cheaper on amazon: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Adobe-Creat...DAL6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1350064750&sr=8-1

Get a copy of Lightworks and Da Vinci Resolve.

Then you'll have free Hollywood grade editing and grading.

I'm wondering what After Effects does for stop motion that Ffmpeg doesn't?

I prefer to use premier pro. When i was at uni we got a free multi licensed copy

I've just started using CS6 Premier Pro and After Effects... too early to say really but once you've got your head around how it works it appears to be great so far.
I found the 80-90 Utube tutorials through 'Creative Cow' to be very useful indeed.

After Effects is a bit OTT for stop motion, but Sony vegas is ideal.

Another alternative is Hitfilm2 - http://hitfilm.com/

Here's one I did a while ago using Sony Vegas & FXHome (Which is now Hitfilm)....

CS6 has been replaced by Creative Cloud - check it's still licensable.

CC was announced long after that post. I'm currently still using Adobe software though my university course, but when the time comes that I have to purchase my own I highly doubt I will be going the Adobe CC route, in fact I regret recommending Premiere Pro to so many people now.
