Hi all , after purchasing my first dslr, I am now also looking for some software. Also what books would you recommend as I blew my preset budget and now I will have to wait until payday to get on a basic photography course . Ps to moderators I hope this is in the correct forum. If not sorry!

You can download Nikon View NX2 for free, it's pretty good. I also use Nikon Capture NX2, but most of the adjustments I generally do (eg WB, exposure) can be done in View NX2. The main competitor to Nikon's software is Adobe Lightroom - have tested the trial but I prefer the Nikon software.

To start of elements 9 you can download a months free trial .....

Books go down library and just get a load out some are good some will be bad. There two many to list

Just found a copy of dummies guide to dslr cameras , I think I fall into that category at the moment :)

I read my dummies book front to back and it's a good start then practice practice

You can download most of the software packages with a months free trial... so with Aperture, Lightroom and the rest you should have at least 4 months to mull it over!

Personally I think Lightroom is brilliant and well worth the money. Shoot in RAW, you will be able to do so much with your images!

Also have a look at

GIMP, Irfanview, Paint.net, Photoscape; all are free.

First of all, what camera are you using? And did it come with any software? I know Canon DPP is OK, and have heard good things about the Nikon equivalent.

Other than that Photoshop Elements is great for the price, pretty much all that most Photographers will need and costs about £60.

I use Lightroom, which isn't quite as good at editing as Elements, but packs in some powerfull image management features, it costs about £200 iirc.

(Photoshop CS5, is a much more expensive version of Elements, and unless you know you need to to be working in 16bit/CMYK is probably overkill for most photographers and costs over £500.)
