looking at this option 18-200, which i assume would be more versatile to my 18-55 and 55-200.

which sigma one and how much are these for nikon d40 fit?

Not sure I understand the question. But I'll try...

Sigma make two versions of the 18-200mm: the original, which I have on my Canon 350D, and the OS (Optically Stabilised) version which my brother-in-law has on his Canon 400D. I think the OS version is better - it's bigger but feels more robust - and I've seen reviews which say it's also a bit better optically.

Nikon also make an 18-200mm VR.

You can check lens prices at Camera Price Buster. Unfortunately they only show Sigma prices for Canon fit, but they'll probably be similar for Nikon fit.

thanks.

i think they make one for the nikon d40, but need one which auto focuses with motor built in lens

Don't they all do that? All Canons require the focussing motor to be in the lens, so I'd have thought that if Sigma can make a lens to work with a Canon, they can - and therefore probably do - make the same lens (with a different mount, obviously) to work with a Nikon D40.

Or am I missing something?

still new to all this, but the nikon d40 motor is not in the body or something like that.
someone might be able to explain better
