Yes
i want to hard-wire my router to my desktop computer

eBay lists Cat 5e, 6, 7 and 8 cables

what are the Cat designations and which should i buy...?

thanks

Perhaps these pages will help.......broadly speaking AFAIK it is about data transfer speeds and resilience/robustness of the cable plus the intended network environment.

Cat 6 will perfectly fine unless you have some super fast Ethernet port and router not usually found in the home setting.

While cat 5e will also technically work, it is an older technology and just no real benefit in buying it.

@Box Brownie

the first link was a good read...and really confirms what ecoleman suggested - so ordered Cat 6.....:)

FWIW I think the few cables I have are either unlabeled, now removed from use, or Cat 5 or 5e

IIRC Once you go to Cat6 the thicker gauge of the wires makes the cable that bit fatter and loses a bit of flexibility.

What would I buy next as needed, Cat6 would be my choice.
