Which prime lens, 25 to 35mm range, Canon fit.

Looking for something to compliment the nifty fifty as I am not overly happy with the 17-85 lens I have.

Searching and there seems to be endless options and I am getting a little confused. Sigma or Canon? f1.8, f2...? 24mm, 28mm, 30mm, 35mm...? etc.

It is basically for car meets, shows and photoshoots. The 50mm can make it harder to shoot if people are walking around so maybe a 28mm or similar. I use a Canon 40D and the price range is something around £300.

The 28mm f1.8 Sigma seems to fit the bill perfectly, or the Canon 35mm f2.

but it doesnt have a USM

I recommend the canon 28mm 1.8....I got one .... and compared to the 24L II of my friend.
28mm 1.8 is better starting from the aperture of 2.8

Another good choice is Sigma 30mm f1.4, its sharp and fast.
But the only problem is same as the Sigma 28mm 1.8, the focus accuracy of Sigma HSM may not provide a good result on Canon cameras
 
The Canon 35 f2 is a great lens and I use it whenever I am travelling on business. Like you I just couldn't fit enough in on my 50.

You will have a lot of trouble getting one though. After 3 months of looking (not willing to pay rip-off prices) I finally got a 2nd hand one from London Camera Exchange. Is now on my camera as much as my 17-40L.
 
Sigma 30mm f1.4. I have one and its superb, just takes a bit of getting used to technique wise!
 
I think I might go for the 35mm Canon, then upgrade to the 30mm Sigma if I find I need it, think the prices are as below. Problem is like you said, that Canon is out of stock everywhere. Hmmm. Was hoping there might be one I can go to Jessops to buy tonight but think this needs some more time.

Canon 28mm f2.8 ~ £170
Canon 35mm f2 ~ £240
Sigma 30mm f1.4 ~ £320
Sigma 28mm f1.8 ~ £340

Just read a review saying if you have a Canon forget the Sigma 30mm and get a Canon 28mm f1.8. Why is there so much variety!!!

Not flaming, just discussing :)
Yes, there is no USM but to be honest I knew what I was getting and I find the auto focus stunningly fast. I took some shots in an almost dark theatre on Monday and got consistantly excellent results on every one. The only time the noise is loud is when I hold my hand in front of the lens and let it 'hunt'. Apart from that no issues and it is so light and easy to carry.

Sigma 30 f1.4 for me. Best bang per buck imo.
 
I love my canon 35mm f2 and use it in low light situations at high iso.. its sparkingly good :)
 
I gave my 35/2 away to a friend without really using it, might have to ask for it back now :D
 
I'm going to wait til LCE Derby or somewhere local has a Sigma 30mm f1.4 for sale, or if the Canon 35mm f2.0 crop up in stock before then I'll grab that.

I don't mind buying the Canon blind, but the Sigma with its issues I'd want to test first.
 
Is a f2 going to give you much advantage and be worth buying over a quality f2.8 zoom?

A f1.something deffo opens up enough of a gap between itself and a f2.8 zoom to justify the loss in flexibility between a prime and a zoom but as you creep ever closer to f2.8 the argument for primes disappears IMVHO.

The advantage for me of the 35mm f2 is lightness and small size. Ideal for taking my camera "everywhere".
 
Yup, I can see that but faced with a f1.4 with full time manual focus the f1.4 makes even more sense over the f2 non USM to me personally. Of course a f1.4 brings issues, I love mine but hit 1/8000 in good light and some bodies can't hit that.
