I'm looking to buy my wife a new Point n' Shoot camera for her birthday as she has a 5 year old Pentax that is a little worse for wear and has probably fallen behind the times.

I have a digital SLR as the family workhorse camera so I'm not looking to go overboard. However, I would like a camera that comfortably outstrips the abilities of her iphone 3gs.

I've not got a specific budget in mind, but I don't want to go overboard. This is the camera that she will have in her bag for nights out, etc so it can't be super expensive. Ideally, it should perform well in poor lighting conditions as it may often be used in pubs, etc. Also, it would be a bonus if if can shoot jpeg+raw so that I can more readily edit around her shooting mistakes ;)

Suggestions welcome :)

Last bump....anyone got even a few decent recommendations for me to go research?

What is the max amount your prepared to spend ?

Hmmmm, I suppose £250 as anything above that is a bit too expensive to have clattering around in a handbag on a night out.

Surely a specific point n' shoot camera is way better quality than an iphone 4?

Take a look at the Sony DSC-TX5 and TX7. They're both available from £229 on Amazon, depending on colour. They're compact and water (drink) proof. I don't have one but thought they might fit the bill. Reviews/comments I've seen look reasonable.

Another strong candidate might have been the Canon S95, which you could have picked up for £250 a couple of days ago, but is now priced a bit higher. The f/2 (at the wide end) lens should help out with shooting in dim conditions.

By the way; is there any merit in geezers suggestion? Does a camera like the TX5/7 or S95 comfortably outperform an iphone?
