Hi to all, I know this is going to get some diff answers but I am hoping to make the right choice with your help....
I normally shoot with a Canon 550d, but I am looking for a point and shoot that will fit in my pocket, as its not always convenient to carry a DSLR, as I am sure you agree, the thing is.. it needs to be a fast start up, have virtually no shutter lag, be a minimum of 14 mp and preferably have RAW, altho the raw bit isn't a must, oh yes and a MAXIMUM spend of £250
thanks in advance for any help

You want a lot for under 250! Don't get hung up on mega pixels, they ain't everything. The quality of the lens is more important.
Apart from that, ARE there any compacts that shoot in raw?
If raw isn't a must, go for a Panasonic, they have Leica lenses and are fantastic.

Hi thanks for that, I hadn't thought of Panasonic, i have seen a Canon with RAW, £459, and you are right about the mp's
Thanks again

Try the Lumix TZ series. Fantastic results, large optical zooms but no raw. But they can be got for around £150ish.

Olympus XZ-1 or push the budget a tad to bring Fujifilm X10/XF1 into focus?

Samsung EX-1, should be available for under £250. I fid it to be a cracking little camera, really good IQ, shoots RAW, start up is quick (not DSLR quick, but pretty good) and its built to a very high standard.

Yes, there are lots that shoot in raw. You really are obsessed with that Panasonic of yours aren't you, you mention in in pretty much every thread, there are other/better cameras available you know :)

And you seem to be pretty much obsessed with putting down the Panasonic. I don't see you putting down the Samsung, The Canon, the Olympus! Or is it the fact that I like one of my cameras so much i'd recommend it to anyone. Just because you, very obviously, don't like Panasonic, doesn't mean everyone shouldn't like them. And the smiley face doesn't take away the fact that you're just trolling, looking for a word fight. I'm now going to put you on ignore, because I don't appreciate being slagged off every time I try and give the benefit of my (admittetdly limited) experience.

For the record, I think Panasonic are fine and I have even owned one and liked it (LX3). The owners seem to be a bit touchy though :)

Not that you will see this but apologies if what I have said has offended you, it was honestly meant in jest. You may need to be careful throwing out challenges though (such as challenging anyone to find a better compact than yours). If you challenge people expect some comeback.

Seriously though it is a good example of what is wrong with the answers given to what camera should I buy threads as most people can only ever suggest you buy the same one they did which may or may not suit someone else and is always going to be biased as it was their decision so they would think it is teh right one.
