Yes
I have never owned a P&S camera but have often been out somewhere and wished I had one tucked in my handbag (small).

I am thinking of getting one. Which makes and models do you think I should read about. It has to be small but large mp's and good lens. built in flash? easy to use. I am a Canon Girl, but would consider other makes for a point and shoot.

What kind of budddddddddgtttttttttttttt you are looking @ gilly?

I bought my girlfriend a sony cybershot W50. It came highly recommended and she has no complaints. The newer models retail at about £130 I think.

Samsung, the NV range is great, or you can pick an S700 up for about £150. Can't recommend their P&S's enough, easy to use, great fun too.

Ideal budget: £299 - Ricoh GRD. 28mm fixed lens, simply beautiful.

Otherwise, I'd second the recommendation for the Fuji F31fd - some great deals too, as it's just been replaced. Great camera though.

On a serious budget? Sony Ericsson K800i - Yep, it's a cameraphone, but if you only want to carry one item with you, yet still get good enough piccies for a 5x4 or wallpaper sized, then it'll do the job!

Cheers,
James

My girlfirend has a canon ixus 65 (I think), it's a superb camera with a great macro mode and very pocketable. The fuji f30 series is also very highly regarded. If it was me I'd be going for one of them.

Ooooooh! what a lot of different ideas. I have made a note of them all and will read up on them. Leica M8 - erm! let me think about that one:thinking: Thought - in my dreams.

I've got a canon A630, very pleased with it, you've just missed out on the canon cashbacks over the bank holiday weekend.

I've always really liked the look of the Canon G7 but its a bit pricey for a p&s.

Bought a Canon A570 IS for a mere 83 quids during the Bank Holiday weekend Cash back. Can't go wrong with that price :D

I thought this looked good for the money actually

But is it classed as a P&S hmmm ?

Fujifilm S5700

and if its not i started out with a fujifilm F650 it was pretty good for the price.

Canon IXUS 850is, a superb P&S camera but im not sure what they retail for, so only a maybe suggestion

I have owned a Canon Ixus 60 since January & I am delighted with it. If it's a small, good all rounder that you are looking for I can strongly recommend a camera from the Ixus range.

I have posted some photos I took with it Here and Here

My dad purchased a Canon IXUS 75 and it seems to be amazingly good. I have only been playing with it for an hour or so, but the flash seems good and the ISO handling seems pretty good :D auto focus is amazingly accurate too. Under £200 too :D

Whoooooo! My daughter is back from Uganda and just arrived up to stay the weekend, and guess what? ..... she has brought her camera up for me to download her images. She has a Canon Ixus 60. Hey, I like it. Hardly any shutter lag, good focussing and sharp images. Ummmm, I'm smitten. Horden Hillbilly, thanks for the images. Jimmy Lemon, I will also look at your model too. Thanks for helping me.

Fuji F31FD for me.

Always with me.

This is what I'd go fo too. From all the reviews I've read it blows the competition out of the water (in the same price bracket) for quality and use in low light.

I've got the older Fuji, the F11. It's ace for low light and pretty good for everything else. The F31 is an update of it.

If low light performance wasn't a big consideration though, I'd go for the Ricoh GX100, of if that's too pricey, the GR-D.

Both have SLR-like manual controls, as far as I know they're the only compacts that have front and rear thumbwheel controls like an SLR, and both have reputedly excellent lenses. Only flaw seems to be the slow RAW write times and a bit of high-ISO noise compared to say the Fuji.

I have a canon ixus 75 too, and i love it!!!! its a great little compact, and i love all the 'colour programs' on it too, like colour accent, colour swap and vivid, neutral, black and white, sepia etc. the photos are fantastic too!

I have to say that my wifes black coloured Sony Cybershot has produced some very nice images. Have to recommend this little beauty. It is also very slim, and fits in Jens bag (or my pocket!!) easily.

I'd recommend a Lumix (panasonic). Good lens (Carl Zeiss), wide zoom range, image stabilised. I have a 5m pixel one which I bought a couple of years ago for when I didn't want to carry my SLR about.

Works really well.

Cheers guys. I am still considering. Got a bit of a spreadsheet thing going for comparisons

Hi Gilly,
I have a Canon Ixus 9ooTI.
Super little camera 10 m pix an loads of other settings.
I realy recomend the Ixus range, and you would still

Now that sounds a good idea. Gilly's off to check it out.....Thanks

We were torn between the IXUS 70 and 75. The 70 had a view finder, but smaller screen. Looking through the view finder it was awfull! worse than the things you get on a disposable camera :( Take it yours has a bit more quality Dave?
