When going on holiday, (sightseeing, city type break) I don't want to lug the whole kit and caboodle with me....worried re security.

Should I invest in a decent compact, or should I get a "superzoom" lens so that I'm not constantly wishing I had something wider/longer? If the latter...which one? All advice greatfully received.

PS: not going with hubby, so no-one to watch my back. Taking elderly mum for a treat.

Hi Carole,

When I was in Whitby last week the Sigma 10-20 didn't leave the camera, I took my full kit out with me for a couple of the days and when the weather was fine just took the camera body and 10-20. So personally I'd get a wide angle :)

Your 24-70 might suit you as long as you don't want anything too wide, or obviously your 17-85.

Think of them as general purpose lenses.

hope that helps

Matt

You've got what you need for a city break already - 24-70.

I tend to use the 24-105. Admitedly, a little longer reach, but you've enough there and the advantage of 2.8

Why not take the 24-70 and the 2x convertor?

When I was in Toronto I took the 10-20 and 24-70. Since then thats all I ever use. If I go for a walk around Liverpool, its them 2. Definitely take the 24-70, thats all you'll need.

Stupid me....never realised it would fit.... Doh!! :bonk:
Thanks Guys, will stick with my lovely 24-70mm.

didn,t think either canon converters fitted or do you have another make?

out of your lenses id take the 17-85, means youve got a nice wide lens but a bit of reach if needed.

i pretty much always have my 18-50mmf2.8 stuck to my cam when i go away and ocasionally find myself wanting for a tad extra poke at the top end!

then again i now always take my ixus60 either instead of (when im away testing with the rally cars etc) or as well as. it fits in the pocket so its ok if you go out of an evening (or in my case if im working on the cars it sits in my pocket or in my toolbox) instead of lugging everything!

Still take that lens if the 2.8 is required. Otherwise the 17-85 will give you more scope (or take the lightest).

Ignoring your list of lenses my advice to anyone would be to take 50mm and wider as this will challenge you skills/eye more.

Enjoy your holiday and lets see the results - what ever glass you take!!

I think you might be right....the 17-85 for both the wider angle, a bit more length and the low weight..... if I also chuck in my 50mm f1.8, I'll be able to get some indoor shots without a flash. Thanks! Sorted!! :) ......walks away singing <<oh this year I'm off to sunny Spain, hey viva espania>>

take the 24-70 2.8 its the best lens you have, if its too short or long zoom with your feet.

Ditto..:)

As you know its an all-round lens which will do the job nicely.;)

I dont understand. Everyone is talking about the 24-70...?

The 17-85 has all those focal lengths and more, with comparable (sp?) IQ?

No brainer if you ask me.

the 24-70 2.8 is a far better lens in the image quality stakes than the 17-85.

Woodsy2k

Read the reviews, The 24-70mm 2.8 is leagues ahead of the 17-85 in every department.

Hi woodsy.....they are right....on paper you'd think the extra width/length would make it the best choice, but its no where near as sharp, anywhere in its focal length and has noticeable distortions at the wide end.

The only advantage is that it has IS. If only the 24-70 had it (believe me, I need it!).;)

It doesn't matter which one you take - you'll find the perfect image that has to be taken with the ones you haven't brought. So... either take them all or leave your cameras at home.
