Hey guys, so im getting a 430ex for christmas, fingers crossed, ill be using this as my main on/off camera flash. I was wondering what other flash i could get that might be a little cheaper to use as an additional off camera flash.

If you could recommend a few that would be great

You could pick up an older Nikon SB-24, 26 or 28 perhaps. They go quite cheap. Depends how you plan on triggering them, though.

Since the SB24,26,28 have been recommended by the Strobist the 2nd hand prices have gone up, you would be lucky to get a 28 for less than £80-£100 now. With all the auto everything features being thrown into flash it is increasingly difficult to get a flash that allows full manual control these days.

The Vivitar 285AV is supposed to have been relaunched recently to address this market, although there doesn't seem to be great availability in the UK.

well i would probably use a slave or even some fleebay triggers but i really cant see the point in getting two canon dedicated flashes at the moment, and i cant budget anymore equipment for a while at that price... So vivitar or try and hunt for an old nikon... any others?

What would you recommend to trigger them?

Skyports, personally! But they're a reasonably significant wedge of money at 120 for the transmitter/receiver set and then another 80 for a second receiver.

You could probably pick up some older canon flashes which would no doubt do the trick too. Any good flash with manual mode will do you fine.

what came before the 420?
