Hi

A friend bought his wife a Nikon body and is thinking about buying her a 50mm lens...

The camera is one of the consumer body - D3100 -

From a previous thread I was told he needs to buy the AF-s lens, what is the difference between the Nikon 50mm 1.8G lens and 1.8D lens ?

1.8d is manual focus or in-body focus which the d3100 doesn't have.

Their are prob other differences but in basic you need the 1.8g

Sorry if it seems obvious but your friend might not have considered it - but could be worth reminding him that 50mm on the crop sensor D3100 is around 85mm. When I had a crop, I purchased the 35mm 1.8 DX and it never left the body.

I've discussed this with him, so he's lots to think about - might come down to if a good 2nd hand one appears...

The main thing I didn't know (being a Canon shooter) was which lens he needed to look at...
