Right, in manual the camera will display the matchstick needed but shoot at what ever settings you have picked.
In auto the camera is aperture priority and will select the correct shutter for your chosen aperture, the meter on the OM is a match for any handheld meters at what it does. If left in auto it'll drop to stand by turning off the metre, if you touch the shutter button it'll turn on and metre in time for a correct exposure.
In off the meter comes on for a fraction of a second to make a correct exposure.
