Just looking into acquiring a Netbook to be able to keep up with my website etc whilst out & about & wondered if anyone had any experience with them.....I'm specifically looking for one with 3G support to ensure I have connectivity wherever I am, wi-fi just doesn't hack-it in some places

thanks

What about an Advent 4213 (Rebadged ECS G10iL)? I've got one of these, been using if for a couple of months now, scores very well on the performance side of things. Can be had for £250 if you shop around.

Thanks for the reply..I've just seen a the Dell Inspiron for sale in the Vodafone shop, very short on diskspace though...only 8gb. Samsung seem to get decent reviews but don't come with integrated 3G....do the 3G "fobs" you can buy work with all Netbooks ?

thanks

If it is a windows based netbook, definitly
From a colleague at work who runs linux te USB sticks are much trickier to get working

the ace aspire one is pretty cheap(was £150 at asda a little while ago). it is quite happy running win xp and using my mobile, it will quite happily connect to the internet on the go. and can be used to shot tethered to your cam. has a 160gb hard drive and 512mb ram(upgradable to 1.5gb)

I use an Eee PC with a 3G fob from O2. I got the Eee PC 901 just for the portability factor and the battery life. It only has 12gb hard disk (the Linux version comes with 20GB), but it's solid state and it gives me up to 8 hours battery life. It was the best compromise between size and comfort, with a 9" screen making it just 1kg. I'm quite happy, and it is upgradable if I want to. I can always add a new hard disk, either a higher capacity solid state (which are quite expensive) or a regular laptop harddrive which will limit my battery life by a lot. What I did is I bought a 16GB SD card which is always in the card slot, working as an extra hard drive, and thinking of getting a 32GB one as a cheap upgrade.

No, avoid that one at all costs. The HP has an odd mouse configuration and it is SLOOOOOOOW to the point of no return. An Atom notebook with a 3g dongle from the likes of Vodafone is your best option, these'll even run Photoshop no bother!

I have the 4211 from Advent (get from Novatech.co.uk as MSI Wind!, higher spec now!!), nicer build quality than the 4213 although you would have to plug in the dongle.

Once you have a netbook, you wont regret it, but make sure you get one with a 10" screen and at least 1024x600 resolution. Anyting else is tooooo small..

Yep avoid that HP unit and go with something with an Atom processor, should hopefully be better on battery life and performance.

As mentioned above, all 3G dongles and sticks will be fine under XP/Vista/OSX (and most open source unix platforms) just as long as you don't mind having things hanging off your laptop. Other alternative is to go for a 3g enabled mobile, whack a data tariff on it and link that to your laptop over BT.

cheers for the info,

I would ideally prefer integrated 3G, the new MSI wind U120 sounds very promising..thought it was released in January but can't find any U.K prices as yet

try something with hspda instead of 3g it's faster

I use my htc touch hd just plugged into my lappy to get internet without a landline
