Hello,
I am going on holiday in a few weeks to the coast, I want to try and get some photos with smooth water of the sea using an ND filter and a tripod. I currently don't own any ND filters, since I don't think I will use it that much I don't want to spend too much (£35, but I could go up to £45 if needed). I have a Sigma 18-200mm DC EF lens that has a 72mm filter thread.
I have been doing some research and it would seem the cheaper variable ND filters don't work too well. I have found several options, I am not sure which one is best for my use case or if something different would be better.

I've used (and still own) filters from K&F and Urth, no problems with either.

Have a look at Pig Iron too, they're sold on eBay by a camera shop called something like Jack the Hat Cameras. Very cheap, and again I've had no problems.

Thank you for your response. I think I am probably going to go with the Urth since I have read good reviews about it, I also like the price and the lifetime warranty.

Good plan. The other thing I like about Urth is that they plant trees for every item you buy (y)

Hello,
The Urth ND64 + CPL filter arrived Sunday, I haven't had a chance to use it properly yet. But on the surface it seems to work well, I have only taken some test photos so I haven't tried it for smoothing water yet. I will let you all know how it works in a few weeks once I have had some time using it.

A 6 stop may not be enough for long exposures , i do a bit of beach type long exposures and sometimes a10 Stop isnt enough , have you seen gary goughs channel on youtube
Hopefully it's fine, I have already brought it now...

Always found these to be good quality for the price.
