Am thinking of replacing my 2013 MacBook Pro - it has 8gb ram, 500mb SSD and 2.6Ghz Dual Core i5 - It works fine TBH, but kids are at an age when they could do with a laptop, plus at 7yo I just fancy a new one. Not in a rush, may well wait till Oct when they tend to launch a new model, but could well buy one sooner, who knows.

My biggest question is around the processor - will the 1.4 Quad be a slower/same/faster than mine? Also, it comes with 2/4 Thunderbolt ports, so USB C - it looks like no standard UBD ports which i would youse with an external drive for Time Machine, or USB memory etc... If I wanted to cable connect my iPhone, how?

Also, I could go for the 1.4 Quad (boost up to 3.9) with 16GB RAM for £100 less than 2.4 (boost to 4.1) Quad and 8GB RAM - what would be better? The only things outside of Office and web I do is LR, iMovie - may use PS at some point if I can learn it but would be the occasional use rather than anything else.

Rumours are that the new 14" MacBook Pro will be announced some time this month and available shortly afterwards. Rumours also say that it will have up to 32 GB of RAM and to 4 TB of storage. Rumours again say that by October you might be able to walk into an Apple Store and buy one outright. But rumours have been known to be wrong before now.

[EDIT} OK, they got the 14" bit wrong. It's 13.3".

Mine's on its way. I was faced with a similar situation, though my existing MacBook is the early 2015. My consideration was, do I want a replacement, or do I want to get something that's fairly future proof. For my needs, with photography, music production, and video, the base model wouldn't suffice. I'd need more RAM for the video and also in case I upgrade my cameras or phone to ones that create much bigger raw or jpg files. I'd also want a faster processor to handle the music side. The 512 GB of storage would be OK if it weren't for the fact that I want to phase out my Windows PC and keep it for use as a media server. So I'll transfer everything over.

I ordered the higher-spec MacBook with the 10th gen processor, 32 GB of RAM, and 1 TB of storage. I reckon I should get 8-10 years out of it. Apple should support it for 8 years - they've just recently stopped supporting the 2012 MacBook, so yours might only have 1 year of life left. But there's a fix that lets you run the latest OS on old hardware. This could keep yours running for longer and allow me to get 10 years out of mine.
