Hi
first post so please be gentle!!!

looking for a lens for my dads 400d as we have only the standard kit lens. we tend to use the camer mostly for motorsport events, some action shots, and family photos.

so far ive found these lens's which have been reccomended to me;
Sigma 18-200 DC OS which ive found for around £280

Canon 70-300 which seems to be around £350

and

Canon 70-200 L f4 which again seems to be around £380 but doesnt have IS which as none of us are particularly good at photography maybe important.

i liked the feel of the sigma i played with over the canon but that maybe to do with the weight, however i couldnt play with the last canon the 70-200 L f4.

looking to get this asap as would like one in time for goodwood FOS.

thanks.

No idea about canon kit, but a particular irritant of mine is the incorrect spelling of lens.

lens - singular : looking for a lens.
lenses - plural: these lenses have been recommended.
lens's - possessive, of the lens: the lens's features.

yes - I'm sure it's petty of me.

In my little experience ,"IS" doesn't really matter for motorsport ,infact i turn mine off ,i'm sure the folks on here with a lot more knowledge than me will get back to you

noted:) wasnt sure tbh with how to spell it!:bonk:

IS isn't really necessary for motorsport - most of the time on a good day you'll have the shutter speed either too fast for shake to be a problem for head on shots, or panning with a slower shutter where IS isn't needed.

I can't compare to the other lenses, but I own the Canon 55-250mm F4-5.6 IS and would highly recommend it - £240 from Jessops but available for much less online. It compares VERY well to other much more expensive glass and for the money I reckon its a bargain :)

HTHs a little.

Yep just had a wee look 55-250 IS £160.. Digitalrev.com

well looks like im going for the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 L USM Lens so will i need any filters or hoods to go with it?

All Canon L series lenses come supplied with a hood.

You might want to think about fitting a UV/protector filter onto the front, simply because there can be a lot of crap flying around (dust, dirt, gravel etc.) at motorsport events. Don't get a cheap one though - it will degrade the image quality and negate the point of having bought a decent lens.

which ones are good as there seems to be such a price range out there! been looking at some hoya pro ones on ebay but worried they maybe fake.

i went with the canon 70-200 f4.0 L in the end so looking for a good filter to go with it.

ill start a new thread now.
