Hi all,

I'm looking to buy a second hand canon 30D camera to get myself started. I've seen a few for sale with different lenses. I don't know much about lenses yet so was after a bit of advice. The two main lenses I've seen being sold with the cameras are an 18-55mm and 35-80mm. Which would be the better choice?

Thanks

18-55. I think the 35-80 is aimed at full frame cameras. You will find the range better on the 18-55.

Hi

The 18-55 was possibly the standard kit lens (it was the 17-85 on the 40D).

The 18-55 is okay, the 18-55IS is a better lens and can be picked up for around £50-60 2nd hand, the mkII is out now and it's just a cosmetic upgrade.

As long as you're not paying much extra for the body with the 18-55 lens over a body only say, then it's probably worth going for as you can buy new and better lenses once funds allow and you know what you're after.

With regards to the 35-80, how much is it compared to the 18-55, compared to a body only ? Then as above...

I think my deciding factor would probably be the body itself, which is better, maybe has a lower shutter count, maybe has more with it - spare battery for example, which is cheaper if there is very little in it, which is nearer so you could possibly collect and inspect (if it's over the internet) etc etc...

Hope this is of help...

Thanks,

I've been looking on eBay so I've messaged the sellers to ask about the camera history and shutter counts, not had anything back yet.

What would be the main differences between the two lenses?

Cheers

You may not get much joy with the shutter count question. I couldn't get the shutter count if you asked me but I would at least tell you but then I am a good little eBayer :)

Cheers everyone,

I've got a good idea where I'm going and what I want now. After a few probing questions To a few sellers I may have got what I need. I'll be back on to ask about other lenses in the future no doubt!

Thanks a lot!

Mark
