Yes
Off to see the fireworks tonight at Bournemouth Pier and was thinking of taking my camera along.

One lens and no tripod, which one would you tale if any. 70-200mmf4 50mmf1.8 or 10-20mmf3.5

depends how far away you are - and if you have a clear view. 70-200 & 50 probably
2nd thoughts - take em all! Can't tell till you get there! I've normally used my 24-70 for fireworks.

I normally go with a 10-20mm and have got some cracking photos.
As said above I guess it depends on how close you are and what you are wanting the final photos to come out like!

Went with the nifty fifty in the end, think I made the right choice.

I hope lol

Perhaps it is a bit late, but 'no tripod' is recipe for disaster when dealing with fireworks. You can nearly always to find a nice clear space right in front or high up at the back to get that perfect view.

Sorry - that's just rubbish. Here are a few of my 'disasters' - all hand held. :)

It depends on the equipment you have and your technique - a tripod is almost always a burden if there is a crowd - tripod shots might work too but certainly no tripod is NOT a recipe for disaster!

My first ever go at fireworks, here's two straight off my camera, hand held at 1/30 f8 ISO 800

You done well for a first attempt hand held, they look a little out of focus, but at least you dint just go for the firework its self, (and just end up with a load of explosion shots), as you included the rest of the scene. looks like you had a good vantage point which is always a good thing,

I always use a tripod for firework shots, F11, ISO 100, tripod and cable release, heres one of my shots, its 28 secs exposure, as the shot went off open the shutter wait untill just before it finishes cover the lens with black card wait for the next remove the card and replace as it finishes again did that 2 more times, keeping the foreground partially covered with the card, so not to blow the fire area that way you get more than 1 firework explosion, its a bit of advanced technique

I would have thought you'd have been better off with a wide lens, tripod and long exposure? That way you'd get a whole sky full of fireworks!

Not bad but as said, they look slightly blurry - could have been OOF but I doubt the 1/30 shutter speed helped either :)

I'm going to see some fireworks tonight (last night of the BSO proms!) and will be making my first attempt at shooting them so I'll let you know how I get on!

Thanks Guys, went with family and friends last night and had no intention of taking my camera with me, but just before setting off I changed my mind, as you do.

Next time, I will take a tripod and a couple of lenses, and most importantly, go on my own. ;)

Well, main lessons from tonight, keep f/11 or smaller and more importantly, a dew covered lens takes blurry pics!

This one was the best by miles:

Why didnt you start your own thread

Dunno, it was kind of within the scope of this thread, given that I'd commented and I couldn't figure out what sharing forum to put it in :D

Oh, and for what it's worth, I went out and bought a tripod today specifically to take some firework shots tonight. Glad I did.

Yar well, I know this one's pretty decent (by my standards) so don't really need any crit - I learned LOADS tonight just trying it out. Next time will be better.

Too late for the op now I know, but what I learned was:

Tripods are brill (pretty sure I could have got some good shots without one but I've never used one before and I thought the whole experience was great, will definitely use it again for other types of shot).

Seriously, dew is a major issue - I'd have come away with nothing if they hadn't done an encore with more fireworks.

Anything less than ISO200 F/8 is almost guaranteed to burn out, F/11 and ISO100 was great and with a dark sky meant I could just leave the shutter open almost as long as I wanted.

A cable release would have been great.

Ultra wide angle was a definite help, I didn't really need to worry about where the fireworks were going as I could cover pretty much the whole sky (was only about 100m from the stage).

Thanks Adrian

Is this your blog http://pompeydoomcrewmusic.wordpress.com/

Hi Adrian,

Firstly, thanks for asking - more unscrupulous people would have just nicked it :)

I assume that you want the picture to replace the one in your blog?

In which case, as long you make no commercial gain from your blog and I retain all rights then I am happy to let you use the picture if I get credited (if you PM me your email address I'll email a version with a small watermark in the corner).

Cheers,
Ned
