Which lens is best

Hi Everyone,

Im of to las vegas in the new year and really would like to do some night shots.
My only lens at the moment is a canon 24-70, now do purchase a nifty 50
or do I hire a canon 50 1.2L Im thinking of a night heli flight if bowels
permitting so never having used a prime lens I really need some advice.

I would say a fifty isn't wide enough but a nice prime fast prime would be great at night as tripods on the strip really are not an option. If it was me I'd be looking at a 35mm or a 24mm. Having said that you will probably be fine with the 24-70mm on the 5d with it's decent iso performance.

Thankyou for the information much appreciated, the only night shots I,ve taken have always had fill flash so Im just forward thinking trying to cover
as many points as I can.

Thats a good plan, the thing with vegas is alot of the things you will want to photograph at night are very bright anyway so you will get away with the f2.8 if not more with the high iso ability of your body.

I say go wider than 50mm as most of the things I shot in Vegas were big (either wide or tall) so 50mm would never have been enough the 27mm equivalent I had was much more useful.

Thankyou very much for the tips Alex, I kinda thought the 24-70 would be OK for the daytime aspect of things, but never really cranking up the iso to compensate for low light that much in the past sometimes its the plainly obvious we miss.
