I can't make up my mind which lens to take. all Nikon lenses are 50mm F1.4 - Nikon 24-70mm or 70-200mm as first choice of any one. others are 24-120mm- 12-24mm- or tamron 90mm macro.the 80-400mm I would leave at home

So where am I going in a few weeks time on a cruise of course

Stockholme Sweden
Porvoo & Helsinki Finland
St Petersburg Russia
Tallin Estonia
Riga Latvia
Klaipeda Lithuania
Berlin Germany
Fredericia Denmark

So mainly towns but also some countryside
My first thoughts are the 24-70mm with the Nikon D800 as most I guess will be cities and towns. That would take up most of my camera bag. Just able to just squeeze in my camcorder as well for longer shots etc

It it were me, and the main purpose of the visit was to enjoy my holiday, while bringing home some record shots, I'd take the 24-120mm. You'll need the wider end for city shots, while 120mm will give you reasonable ability to capture details on buildings, etc.

My personal "holiday" lens (when I'm just looking for snapshots) is an 18-55 kit lens - lightweight, cheap to replace if it did get stolen/damaged, and covers most of the shots that I need. I've occasionally brought my 55-200 as well, and it rarely goes on the camera.

Obviously , if you have a specific interest (street photography, architecture, wildlife...) that will affect your choice.

Thanks for the reply Philip, Not a bad idea and it has VR which my version of the 24-70 does not. Just one thing it is not an f2.8 lens

Do you really need f2.8, though? :)

I don't know how much light there will be in that region at this time of year (and I'll assume that you don't need the narrow depth of field for anything you'll be shooting?), but I'd guess that you'd get good enough shots with the D800 even at f5.6 or less (don't know which 24-120 you have).

Disclaimer: I used to do a lot of concert photography until I realised that I had stopped enjoying the music because I was so intent on getting the shots. These days, especially on holiday, my primary objective is to usually enjoy the experience and my secondary objective is taking photographs - and I'll often just take a compact with me.

24-120 for 90+% of shots and the 50mm for low light situations (like the Hermitage museum in Leningrad.)

Thanks Nod, then I can get it all in my camera bag including camcorder

It is the AFS 24-120mm f3.5-5.6 VR G. I can now get my AFs 50mm f 1.4 G lens as well as my camcorder all in my camera bag which is a Tamrac System 6. A great bag to go into the flight cabin with me easy to go into overhead locker or as I prefer keeping on the floor. Fraid some nutter will grab at an overhead locker in a rush to leave the aircraft and have my bag crash on the floor
