which laws to scrap

The Hunting Act needs to be repealed, that's for certain. Worst piece of legislation brought in since they lifted the death penalty for using a Canon camera.

It is still legal to shoot Welsh people from the walls of Chester and it is illegal to enter or leave a graveyard other than by the designated entry and exit points (was an arrestable offence until the crime and disorder act removed arrestable/non arrestable offences)

Right that's sorted it then. I am making a weekend of it at end of July.

Saturday - Walls of Chester with a Mauser or a Denel.

Sunday - Chester Zoo with a Siggy 120-400.

Only with a bow and arrow. They would still lock you up for something though :suspect:

the same is true of shooting Scotsmen in York, again with bows and arrows, don't often visit there.......

there's also a daft law in Scotland where it's illegal to be drunk in possession of a cow......

I was discussing this with a colleague last week. The Cons in the ConDem alliance made a manifesto promise to remove regulations.

Our combined opinion was that there would be a headline statement, "Government removes 80 laws from the books!". And in the small print would be mention of five consolidating Acts.. i.e. a very large number of regulations would be abolished.. but all their requirements would remain tied up in a lesser number of new Acts of Parliament. I've got a bit of a bet with him that this is exactly what will happen with quite a few pieces of health and safety legislation - after all, this is one area where the government will almost certainly avoid dealing the the true cause of the perceived problem. It's not the legislation, it's the insurance and the natural tendency of the British people to adopt the Captain Mainwaring attitude.

The graveyard entry/exit law is interesting - I've hopped a few cemetery walls camera in hand. Is this law something to do with The Laundry? (you'll have to be a Charles Stross fan to get this one).

It is part of the ecclesiastic act 1871 (I think) but until a few years ago you could be arrested for climbing through a hole in the fence! (it is still illegal though :))

just seen this on yahoo http://uk.news.yahoo.com/4/20100701/tuk-public-asked-which-laws-should-we-sc-dba1618.html, i wonder what would happen is all the amateur togs in Britain asked for the stop and search powers of the police to be lifted

Apparently these laws have been declared illegal by Europe but that won't stop the police stopping you if they just feel like it as the EU directive won't take effect for over a year yet - thanks to the government.

We had some strange ones introduced to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs over the last few years.

It's illegal to disturb a pack of eggs when instructed not to by an authorised officer. This was part of a detailed set of regulations last year controlling the production and marketing of eggs and of farmyard poultry chicks.

in 2007 they updated the law that says you are not allowed to offer for sale a game bird killed on a Sunday or Christmas Day

The Natural Environment and Rural Communities Act 2006. says you're not allowed to sell a grey squirrel, ruddy duck or other types of flora or fauna not a uk native. Mind you, Japanese knotweed is pretty bad in places, but who's been offering grey squirrels for sale. Is it such a problem they had to create a new law for it?

There's a 2004 law about importing polish potatoes and pretending they are English.

How about the reintroduction of allowing imperial weights and measures.

Apparently someone wants the law repealed that makes it illegal to marry a horse.

Neigh lad.. surely not..
