Ive been following Gilly's thread ... http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=28845
on which version of the 70-200mm to go for, as I too want more length and so am considering the same lens... though I think Im more confused than ever now

Anyway, it got me thinking, bit of a loose question I know but...

Which is the most used lens in your bag and why couldnt you be without it?

So far in my case the Canon kit lens because of its versatility. I'm replacing it with a Sigma 17-70 which I expect will be even more used.

I've had quite a lot of lenses in my time and always find that I go for zoom more than wide angle.

Anyway I think my sig says it all :rules:

Sigma 70-200 2.8 HSM rarely comes off the D80 & then only for Ice Cavern's fabulous Sigma 24-70 2.8 that I bought a few weeks ago. This against fierce competition from my partner's Nikon 70-300VR & excellent 18-135 kit lens.

depends what I'm shooting really. Weddings by far I use my 24-70 the most. Out and about in cities or countryside I'll use my 10-20 most. My 70-200 is invaluable but only really for certain circumstances.

Between the 24-105f4L IS and the 70-200 f2.8L IS.

That's an easy one for me, it would have to be the 500mm f4L. With both converter options it's a hugely flexible lens for bird photography and still maintains AF with either converter on a 1 Series body.

Although you didn't ask, next up would be the 70-200 2.8L IS for much the same reasons, and for those occasions when the 500mm is just too long. :)

My most used.......shut it!!!!........is the 17-40 with the 70-200 f2.8 siggy coming in a close second.

:)

Mine would have to be the 70-200 2.8 VR which lives on my d200, though I would never sell my 50 1.8 and the 17-50 2.8 which lives on the s2 pro will only be sold to be replaced by a 17-55 2.8 Nikon... i need a third body for the 50mm 1.8 to live on .. and another arm :)

Sorry i cant shut it, but you dont USE your camera ? why would you use the lenses on their own ? ;)

:suspect: just because I said most used......doesn't mean it's used a lot, just a bit more than not at all

Im wondering if this might be a good point for me to ask a question i have regarding the 70-200 2.8.

I have a canon 75-300 F4-5.6

Would i do better with the 100mm shorter length but the better light gathering capabilities of the 70-200 F2.8?

I probably use it mostly for wildlife. I can't decide which would benefit me more?

Janice
the image quality of the 70-200 is far beyond the 75-300 even with a 2x Tc on, that would give 400mm at the same f stop as your 300

I did think that was going to be the answer, youve just confirmed it DF, thanks! :)

70-200 2.8L IS at 400mm with the 2XTC - hand held.

And at 200mm without any converter..

Fantastic lens Janice, although I'd say you really do need the converters to maximise it's reach for wildlife.

Great CT. Thanks. That will be on my "far away list" then!

A macro is on my "fairly far away list"..............I love the butterflies! ;)

you could have asked him to brush his feathers before that last shot CT, no excuse for scruffyness!

I've got a Buddleia in flower and still not seeing any butterflies -really weird!

You've probably still got your lens cap on then!!! :D

My 100-400 L is my most used lens, whenever I use my other lenses it always gets put back on the body when I pack away.

Wow! CT
Thats my umming and ahhing done ... I think you just sold me on the 2.8L IS.
Best get myself down the gymn now then!

It's slightly lighter than the 100-400L - but not much. It's well hand - holdable, but a monopod really eases the weight and is a huge help in getting sharp shots.

Great lens and a really useful focal length out of the box without messing about with converters.

Sorry, I have no buddleia but my most used lens is my 70-200 2.8L IS. Very versatile lens & excellent IQ. Well worth it IMHO.

For me, it's the 17-40L, but that's based on the fact I don't tend to use telephoto as much as wide angle.

I *love* the 50mm f1.8, but almost always regret having it with me as the only lens - for portaits though, it's a killer.

Then I have a 75-300 IS which is a stupidly sharp example, I got very lucky there - I still have those days where I hanker for the L version though.

Cheers,
James

Personally, my most used lens seems to be the kit lens. It's a good allrounder in my bag, wide enough for landscapes and arty type wide shots (well, *almost* wide enough :D). And its got enough reach to dig out a candid portrait of someone nearby.

I also have my Sigma 70-300 in my bag, but I tend to find that as soon as I put it on to get the reach, I dont need it anymore, and need to go wider...lol I also try and treat that as a 70-200 unless I *Need* to reach further (because it can get soft over 215mmish).

I also have the nifty, but I find that too restricting to be an everyday lens. More for specific tasks.

70 - 200 2,8 IS! :D

Hardly ever comes off my 20D.

Apparently 64% of my shots are taken with the Sigma 17-70, which is what I would have expected.

The Sigma 70-300 and Canon 70-200/2.8 (non-IS) which replaced it account for 28%. But that is a little misleading as they are used on fewer occasions but ones where I shoot loads like at sporting events. The Sigma 10-20mm makes up only 5.3% but it is on and off my camera far more often that i would say it is my second lens, with the nifty fifty in third.

Although there are times when I would want more reach than the Sigma 17-70 gives me, on an APS-C body 70mm is nowhere near wide enough for me for general use. And as much as I would love a constant f/2.8 lens I would not want to give up either the long or short ends to get a 18-50mm or 24-70mm.

Michael.

Sigma 28-105 2.8-4 absolut pony when wide open, it makes me a little bit sick every time I make the mistake of using it below F8 but it's sucha flexible zoom range I can't bring myslef to throw it in the bin. One day when I win the lottery I'll replace it with the sigma 24-70 2.8.
