I'm toying with the idea to get a high image quality compact camera. Which one would you choose and why?

This really is an amazing compact.
My main reasons are:
Aps-c size sensor
In camera film sims (cross process)
Snap focus ( amazing if you have kids playing outside).
Full manual control if you want it and full auto for the misses.
Wide angle prime lens.
£400 new :)
Fully pocketable.
It has a very good following.
I'm sure the list could go on and on.
Google ricoh gr blogs or check YouTube. If you can get to a shop that has one you should give it a handle, (got mine at London camera exchange). All these pics are jpegs sooc with film sim cross process or retro.

You've asked the equivalent of going into a car showroom and saying 'I want a good car'. The response is 'they're all good' so you really need to narrow things down a bit before you start.
Do you want a zoom lens or would you be happy with a prime. Nick's happy with a prime but I hate the idea.
Do you want an OVF/EVF or is the rear screen good enough? I won't buy a camera without an OVF/EVF but I'm old and I can't see the screen without glasses.
What's your budget?

Agreed! For ultimate IQ alone I'd recommend one of the Sigma DP Merrill range, but there's no zoom and no OVF or EVF. If those are important then maybe a Fuji X20 or X30, or if you want a longer zoom how about the Panasonic FZ1000 or Sony RX10, although those are big and heavy...

It really does come down to what you want (as others have said) - I use the Sony RX100 as it is the right combo for me. It is small enough to slip in the pocket, has a good zoom range and gives great IQ. I had the Canon G1X before and the IQ was amazing but the size didn't work for me as it seemed too big for a compact (I feel the same way about the Fuji X10/20/30 range), for the size I would rather carry a small mirrorless.

my personal favourite is the RX100, but as others have said it's a 'horses for courses' situation

You need to decide which features are most important and then narrow it down that way.

For me the RX100 being so tiny, and yet with a big sensor and all the options I'm used to on my other sony cameras make it a perfect package, and if I use the viewfinder that I share between that and my rx1r then I've got literally no complaints with it.
