I am building a housing for my SLR, so I can put it outside in all weathers and I am looking to make the front of the box obviously see through and watertight.

To maintain image quality and water tightness, would I be best installing a specified lens filter as the front cover of the box or would glass or perspex be just as good?

Not done this, but did build a sound blimp for a cine camera some years ago to mount on a tripod. It's important for the front glass to be as clear a possible and if you are expecting poor weather, then also a cover so that rain does not get on the glass. Possible a UV filter of a large size may work, but it was not hard to use a square peice of really clear glass in my case and it didn't alter the image at all.

Not sure if you are using a trigger or cable release, but if a trigger, make sure the signal reaches the distance and gets through the housing. I used a cable and you can get pretty long ones if you wish .

Put up some shots of the finished housing when you have completed it, I'm sure others will be interested. Good luck
