No
I own a Pentax K5 which I love but it has some flaws and I'm considering upgrading to a K3.

I don't want to be blinkered though, and I was after some help from Canon and Nikon owners.

Which models are metal-housed and full-frame?

D8x0 and above IIRC. Don't dismiss the D750's monocoque construction using modern plastics - it's probably plenty sturdy enough for all normal uses.

Thanks Nod. I'll have a look at those. Is there an easy way to sum up the range above the D800, in terms of what numbers to look at?

What about the Canons?

Have a look at the 6D, polycarb top to allow for the wifi/gps but magnesium everywhere else

The lower the number the older the model. Most have a few sub-species (D3x etc) but a look at Wiki's page will help tell you the differences between them.

Not sure about the Canon equivalents - being a Nikon/Fuji user, I don't keep up with their (Canon's) model ranges and product releases.

What are the flaws with the K-5 that make you want to upgrade?

I went from a K-5 to a K-5II and then a K-3 .... Which I promptly sold to buy a K-5IIs. There are a lot of differing opinions but I found the dynamic range and high ISO performance to be lagging behind the previous models.

I find the auto focus terrible even in good light, but unusable after dusk. To the point that I think it might be faulty.

I am tempted to get a K3, but then I think, "if I'm getting a new camera am I not better off going full frame."

I love 70mm+ portraits and feel I'd benefit from more in the shot.

What lens are you using with your camera? It may be worth getting someone to have a look at it if your having issues. As for the first question the Pentax are great cameras and I think they are very much over looked. For the money they are outstanding bits of kit and not much can touch them. If you go by Amazon pricing a K-3 your talking similar money to a Nikon D7100 ( plastic and not ff) and a K-IIs your talking Nikon D5200 (plastic and not ff) pricing. If your sticking at this sort of price point I would see no real need to swap systems. The full frame cameras from Nikon, Cannon and Sony will cost you far more. All the lower end and older model full frame cameras you do sacrifice all sorts of things to go full frame. For example you could get a used D700 for similar money to a new K-3 but the K-3 will have more mega pixels, more dynamic range, more colour depth, faster burst speed, less shutter lag, have video capability and come with a warranty. I think your best to ask your self what you are going to use the camera for and then work from there and see what will work best for you.
