Hi all, I've just gotten myself a canon 40d and was wondering if anyone could recommend me a relatively inexpensive flashgun?

I've never had one before and as such don't know what to look out for? Any advise greatly received.

Generally, the more you spend, the better you get.....I'd start off cheap, and if you take a shine to it, upgrade later should you need to!! I definitely recommend you buy a set of Wireless Camera Triggers so you can use your flashgun off camera. The Yongnuo's I linked to are great, but will only work in manual mode.....you'll have to do all the hard work settings wise, but it's not difficult to get started with them!!

I'm guessing you'll want a TTL (TTL = Through-The-Lens, which kind of means Auto-Flash) flashgun rather than a "manual mode" only one, so here are a few popular options......

Very cheap: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/YONGNUO-Y...ories_CameraFlashUnits_JN&hash=item2ec29e06e0

Fairly cheap: http://www.wexphotographic.com/buy-nissin-di622-mkii-speedlite-canon-fit/p1523856

Not so cheap: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B001AXFV5A/letscook/ref=nosim

Top of the range: http://www.wexphotographic.com/buy-...e41f5f6c3547c0b38457aed09c4c4a1&utm_source=aw

Hope that helps!!

I believe that Yongnuo now do a TTL flash. Not cheapy cheapy, but still less then the canon ones.
I bought a cheap manual YN one a year or so ago. It lasted a matter of 3 shoots of low use.
Personally, buy the best you can afford. If you need it, you won't regret spending the extra in the long run.

Have a look at the yn568. A great buy in my opinion and next on my list.

Have a look at a Nissin Di622 MkII. I had a MkI and used it on a 550D, 60D and 7D and it is a great flash. It's got the equivalent features of a Canon 430 EX but is under £100 for a new one. The MkI isn't compatible with a 650D so I sold mine and got a Nissin Di866 instead. I've now got a Canon 580EX II and 2 Nissin Di866's, one MkI and one MkII and they are all excellent flashes.
