I have recently purchased a Canon 430EXII Flashgun and will obviously be making full use of it from here on in. At the moment I know nothing at all about flash photography and will be learning as I go along. I will also be making use of the expertise available on this forum.
I now have a question that hopefully someone will answer for me. I have an opportunity to acquire a Canon Speedlight 540EZ Flash Gun with diffusers and am wondering if this is a better gun than my 430. I use a 7D so presumably the 540 will be compatible anyway. I only want to keep one of the guns......so which one should it be.

Any help/guidance will be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

The EZ will work as a manual flash only with your 7D as far as I am aware.

I have a pair of 430EZ for off-camera work, and they're solidly built and dependable. If the price was right I'd certainly grab a 540EZ for off-camera work. It would not replace the 430EX, but it would compliment it.

Hello Alastair, Thank you for your input. This flashgun is almost brand new and is still in its original box. Do you have an opinion as to what would be a fair price to pay for it. Thanks again.

I think I paid about £40 each for my 430EZs, as the only practical difference between the two models is power.. I personally wouldn't pay more than £50-£60. And this corresponds to the most common selling prices being achieved on Ebay at the moment. The occasional mint-in-box example seems to fetch £80-£90.. but for £50 I could have a new YN-560 with approximately the same power.

The only on-camera flash I'd replace a 430EX II with is a 580EX II :)
