any advice on which flashgun to buy for my 400d, i have a budget of around £100:thinking:

A little more info on what you need it for/or what you need it to do will help!

Yeh if its for off camera Strobist type stuff its a whole new ball game so more info needed!

I got a used sigma 530 super DG for £80 and its great.

But like onform said, what do you want it for?

i will be using it for mainly portraits ect, bouncing of ceiling that kind of thing, im new to all this flash photography so any input into it would be great:thumbs:

I was in the exact same boat as you saved for the Canon 430 EX instead.... love it.

Saving a little longer and getting the 430 exII, (£200), will be of great benefit to you in my opinion. It's a great little flash and pound for pound it's a great price. the ETTL alone will improve your portraits no end. And also if you do want to upgrade in the future to say a 580exII you will have a lovely strobist setup with remote ETTL.

By the way ETTL is, evaluative through the lens, a way the body and flash communicate with each other using the available light hitting the sensor to judge automatically how much flash is needed to expose the scene correctly. it's simple and effective.

cheers guys, think im going to go for the 430ex then eh:thumbs::thumbs::thumbs::woot:

If you want it purely for off camera stuff, you can't go wrong with a Vivitar 285HV if you can get your hands on one. Built like a tank, easy to use and a nice amount of light. You will not get any ttl if you do decide to use it on camera though.

You mean built like a British tank....they keep breaking down :shake:

the 430ex is great, I would have got one myself if the sigma didnt come along.
You really do need something with manual power settings and also goto www.strobist.com to get tons of info on flash.

I would also recommend saving for a 430 for a first flash, that way you always have the option of ttl.
Then get ebay triggers, and at a later date a second flash if you want to try multi-light stuff
