I have a Nikon D7100 which I no longer use and was planning to give to my grandson. He is interested in both stills and video, graduating last year with a master's degree in film and TV production, my question is, is there a Nikon more suited to his needs than the D7100 which I could part exchange for mine, or sell mine and buy another without spending a fortune, thanks is advance for any replies.

Does it have to be a dSLR, or a Nikon? If you're going to part exchange I would have thought a mirrorless would be more suitable for video.

The D7100 is 1080p isn't it IIRC which is good enough for video unless you need 4K or 8k, 4k technology is good that you can make a stills photo from a video capture I believe but the downside is with 4K you need a computer with good processing power and adequate RAM. I only ever made 2 videos from my old D7100 which if you pardoned the erratic AF was adequate for my needs, but I've not done video since....

You can live with full hd if the output is sharp (and usually it is not for whatever processing related reason). The big ones may be smooth reliable autofocus and or greater than 8bit support if scenes have high dynamic range. Recent Mirror less will be more modern so probably that's a better way to go for video.

The 7100 will get him started and will produce reasonable results, but it won't be long before he'll start wanting a bigger sensor and better lenses.

The net and YouTube are overflowing with information, so rather than get bogged down in it yourself, if I were in your shoes I'd just let him decide.

Like all these things, it's easy to spend far more than is necessary - especially if you look at newer kit. A big consideration would be better lenses and once again, the newer the kit the more costly.

I've not done any video for many years, but it can be a slippery slope towards excess in the same way as photography as I'm sure you can appreciate.
