I sold my Canon 40D (wish i hadn't!) and bought a Panasonic TZ6. For a compact it's damn good! It's easy to use and the quality is brilliant...for a compact. Some shots are as good quality as me using my 40D.

It does have trouble focusing on some shots and is better suited to shots taken reasonably close up but as said for a compact it is pretty stunning!.

For loads of examples of the TZ6 have a look at my FlickR: http://www.flickr.com/photos/andywest1/

I'd suggest the Canon Digital IXUS 850IS Camera as I find it to be an excellent compact. Only problem is it's been superseded. Have a look at the Canon Digital IXUS 870IS it would be my choice if anything happened to my 850.

Mate of mine bought a Panasonic (FZ5 or something?) and loves it - its great for travel.

What sort of use will he put it to? That might change the recommendations.

I've got a Panasonic Lumix FZ65 to complement my 450D. I've never used it in a serious photographic capacity, only on nights out etc, but I'm more than happy with it! Great lens, and build like a brick (but without the size!)

Just got a Canon powershot sx200 is on the back of a friends research and subsequent owner ship. Have not been able to find fault with it. (3 weeks in our hands now)

Only thing is that it is £289 Jessops with £40 canon cashback - £249 after whatever delay. Warehouse express have it at £239 (inc cashback differential) Never used them though they have had good feedback in threads on this forum.

You have good zoom - (12x) and full manual control as well as all the modes. It self selects the modes as well. That has worked well so far but we'll see over time.
