Which Canon Extender is best with the 100-400 lens IS 11 USM

Been a while since I had my Canon gear and that lens but AFAIK the x2TC of any version will not at all because the AF will work down to f8 and the x1.4 TC is OK as that makes the f5.6. to an f8 i.e. it will AF OK :)

As above the issue is the reduced aperture. Some canon bodies can autofocus with the 2x extender. Live view AF will work for more camera bodies too I think.

I've used both the 1.4x II and III with my 100-400 and I only really moved to the III because Park Cameras gave me a really good trade in on my II

And you get a few more focus points with the III on my 5dmk4 which is useful

I could not honestly say I noticed much improvement in the image quality.

The AF performance does take a bit of a hit with the extender attached but still performs really well

I have the 2x mkiii. AF takes a hit with some of my lenses and I lose a lot of focus points. My best lens with the TC is my 300Lf4, AF remains quite good and I get 9 focus points on a 5Div. I have the 100-400 Mk1 and I don't get any AF with that on my 5D. AF will work in liveview, with the mirror out of the way.

I bought a little Canon M5 recently, as AF will work on that with all my lenses and the TC as there's no mirror. There's no substitute for aperture though, with some of my lenses, I'm up at f13, which is close to useless in most wildlife situations. IMO, you will always be trading something for extra reach with a TC. They have their place but not for everything.

1.4 seems to be the best compromise.
