Considering purchasing a Canon EF 70-200mm IS L Lens but I can't decide whether to get the f/2.8 for f/4.0.

Anyone use either/both of these? How good are they? Is one better than the other?

I've got the 70-200 F4 non IS, bought as my first L lens. Light, stunning quality, excellent lens.

At Christmas I bought the 70-200 F2.8 IS and it's a step above for what I shoot, which is mostly sport with it. The f2.8 means I can easily isolate players, and get extra shutter speed, the bokeh is beautiful and it's just a great lens.

But it's all down to money really. For 1/3 the price, the F4 is a great buy.

Thanks Byker. Just wondering how close in you can get to a player with it. How good is the reach?

How close do you want to get are we talking near or far? I shoot under 13's rugby with it every weekend without any issues.

This is at 200mm, f2.8

And then 70mm for lineouts is just a step or two back

I have both and the answer is always "it depends"

If I need the 2.8 then I take 2.8. If I don't then I take the f/4 and benefit from a sharper lens that is half the weight.

The f/2.8 version is heavier and if you feel that you need the faster lens then go for it.
The f/4 IS version is fine for me and it's a cracking lens.

There are two f2.8 models available....an IS one and an IS II one.

What's the difference? Faster focussing? Sharper?

Big price difference too.

I have a 2.8 non is and i've found not having the is hasn't been too limiting, i much prefer the dpeth of field for portraits etc that the 2.8 gives me over f4.
