I have sold off quite a bit of my kits - and some of my watches. Some more are poised to go . Which has swollen my war chest. So the hunt for new kit is on. My objective is simply to experience using different cameras; and almost certainly would sell of my purchases after using for some time ( my ability to photograph is aweful; so the point is not about improving photographing skill :) . Heretic, i know.. )

First question : I have a Olympus RC 35, Rollei 35, Voigtlander VF101 and a Ricoh 500 G. All of these are lovely, pocketable, Aperture Priority Rangefinder ( except Rollie offcourse). If I were to keep one, which one will you recommend. If I were to sell all 4, and get a Contax TVS, will you think I am making a wrong choice?

Second : If I was going get another camera ( 35 or 120); which one should I experience. I am thinking of a Contarex ( outstanding lens), or a Hassleblad ( why is it so desireable?); a rangefinder folder ( never used one)...

Any other recommendations ?

I'd keep the Rollei if i had to choose one of them, the TVS is a lovely camera for walkabout pocketabilty with the small zoom it has a degree of flexiblity.

well if you're going to get a blad may as well be a 500C/M with an acute matte focusing with split image and microprism:)

I was looking at a Fuji GW670 last night. Lens gets fabulous reviews and it's not too huge to carry around.

There's a Mk111 at ffordes for £650.

I'd love a Hasselblad though.

I like to use http://tokyocamerastyle.com for film camera inspiration!

I also have a hankering for a Rollei 35 but think the Olympus RC35 is a lovely looking little camera. As far as maybe sampling the delights of 120, how about a TLR Mamiya C220 or 330? A different technique required and the opportunity to try a variety of lenses without breaking the bank.

how about a wide thing..

..like an X-pan or a Fuji 617....

you're kinda running out of oddments without going to 5x4

The rollei lens is unparalleled; and its a tessar, not the sonnar. I wonder how wonderful the sonnar might be. Funny thing is , I got a XF35, which had a sonnar lens; but the results were far crispier on the tessar. I have always wondered why. The price of these cameras are going up at an unbelieveable rate; I might just keep it as investment.

I did think of x-pan; but I am not there yet.

What about SL 66? strange beast that one - great zeiss glass, and a 8degree tilt with a bellow in front. plus inbuilt meter. Sounds very interesting; but funny no one mentioned it.

Has anyone used it? any experience, story or rumour about the camera.

P.S : that tokyocamera site is very interesting. Thanks

I'd keep the Olympus RC I think it is just a brilliant camera, apart from the zoom I personally don't see what advantage the Contax would give

Roll film? I looked at the Rollei SL66 and the 6008 series, if you search the web you can find things about them. The thing that put me off was the price of the lens and if it goes wrong very difficult to get fixed.

Went for a Bronica SQ-Ai instead and having compaired the images against a Hasselblad ELX I am more than please with the Bronica.

Mind you haveing said that i have nearly bought a Hasselblad SWC camera a couple of times this week....must resist :bonk:

Nikon F5 is an absolute pleasure to use. They seem to hold a very stable price with a few bargains coming up every now and then.

Ok; so here is a question ( in reverse to 'how much is my gear worth question. Mods : please delete if inappropriate; though I couldn't find a rule which will qualify to disqualify this post)

I have been offered a Rollei 6006 + 80 f2.8 planar + polaroid back + the usual 120 back and battery.

What sort of money should I offer ( the seller has asked me to quote; and the camera is in reasonable condition)

Help please

There's a tidy one on ebay for 400 quid - it's from the US though so you'd get hit for duty.

Nice camera, but totally battery dependent, even for firing the shutter IIRC. Make sure you get the battery charger with it. Also it's a proprietory battery which may need replacing.

Just get a blad - you will eventually anyway. ;)

LOL. I'm not selling, but it's hard to assess a blad without a good look at it. Most of the 500C V series have a fixed focusing screen, while some (the later ones I think) had a removable screen, which means you can fit a metered head if that was what was attracting you to the Rollei.

Generally speaking though blads are pretty bullet proof and the older ones should be in need of no more than a CLA at most unless you were very unlucky.
