Hi,
a friend has asked me to recommend a camera for him to buy.

Needs to an dslr with good jpeg processing as he will not be using editing software.

Can anybody recommend a camera for him?

Many thanks
Sam:)

Price range is the first question....

What budget?
What does he want to photograph?

Budget? Type of photography? Level of experience? Will he ever take it off of the green square? It sounds like, from the very limited info, that a bridge camera may be better but we need more to go on!

sorry guys,

Around £500 for the body and £200 for the lens.
He is new to digital photography. Would like an all round camera with a good range lens.
thanks

Nikon D90 with kit lens and bag. Job done!!

^ What he said. Without a doubt.

And if they magic up another £100, the 50mm f/1.8.

Good set up.

Any of the D90 or 50d with kit lens should do. You will get good prices on both as they are about to be replaced!

edit: actually, both still seem to be out of your price range, the D90 by £50 and the 50D by £150- its a bit of a surprise!

Consider the D90 if he can stretch or go for a D5000 with kit lens or the 550D with either the kit lens or the 18-135 that is a little more expensive. At this level you can't go too wrong really. In all fairness your mate needs to go out and fondle the bloody things to see which he prefers to hold!

£700 would get a 450D with 18-55 kit lens and a 55-250, a 1000D would be cheaper still. There's the Nikon, sony & olympus equivalents too which is where we get into the usual 'go to the shop and try it' advice.

May be worth checking out what he'll do with it, if he'll really get into it then spend the money. But for something that could end up as a glorified point & shoot it may not be worth the outlay on the higher level stuff.

Canon's come with processing software but I haven't used it as I use Adobe stuff.

Without wanting to offend anyone with a D5000....

Don't waste your money on it. You'll want to upgrade within weeks and will have lost money on the D5000.

...and the 50mm will auto focus ;)

WOOOPS

I posted the wrong link, sorry for the confusion everyone......

Don't buy a D5000 get a D90 :bang:

Yes, the last day of my weekend before I go back to work tomorrow. :bang:

Bummer! I have to spend all week with the in-laws!

OP: can the buyer move on budget? If so the D90 will be spectacular VFM for an extra £50. Don't forget the fondling though...
