Hi

Ive just bought myself a canon 30D body and was woundering which all round lens youd advise on getting, ive got a nifty fifty as well.

Lens i was looking at was the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens.

Your advice always welcome.

As always, it depends on how much you want to spend, and what sort of stuff you photograph..
I have a 17-55 f2.8 IS on my 30d and it gets a lot of use, but it is a little short for me - I did have the 24-105 f4 IS but found it a bit slow (ie f4 and not f2.8)
The 18-55 you are talking about it a good entry lens, and small and light enough.
Give us more information and more help might come....

I generally want an all round lens that i can pull out on the camera when i see something i want to photograph and also take alot of photos of koi carp at show events

OK, well that doesn't narrow it down much...
How much do you want to spend ?
Is low light a major factor ?
What about size ?
Having never been to see Koi carp at a show, I have no idea how close you can get, or how big the fish are..
However, it does sound like the 18-55 might be a good starting point, unless you have money to spend..

usually from the vats around a cpl of feet away, fish size can be anything from 6inch upto 32inch.
To get the whole arena in i think a good tele would help but thats another day.

To get the whole arena in, does that = a big area?

If so a WIDE ANGLE will be needed not a telephoto. A telephoto allows you to get in close on subjects along way away, such as a bird in a tree.

hi

some can be big areanas and some arnt so big but understand where you are coming from so really over time i need to have a prime lens which i have with the nifty fifty, a walk about lens, telephoto and a wide angle lens.

so looking at all these which would you all go for not forgetting i couldnt afford all these lenses at 1 go, but would be good to get feedback on the others.

Paul,

Maybe send a PM to RickJ....he's been photographing Koi for a living....unless he appears here later.

Bob

hi paul I use a 28-70 which has ben replaced with the newer 24-70, along with a polarizing filter, and flash.

Hi Rick

Yes them photos look very good and just what im looking to be getting out of this camera and lenses which ever 1s i go for, i know i need a variety of lenses for different occasions but at moment its mainly focusing on koi and portraits.

Still got to get use to the camera and get the settings right as havent had much time since it arrived.

Mainly wanting to look around the canon lenses now i think as turning towards the 1s with image stabilizers built in

Don't forget that unless heading towards L series quality, that IS comes with an associated tradeoff in either handling/build or image quality.

I'm not saying they are bad lenses, they most certainly aren't, but it's something to think about, as for me, Image Quality is king.

Cheers,
James

you could try and find a 28-70L, they are a very good lens and as it has been superseeded by the 24-70 they are a fair bit cheaper, and as they are built to last the chances of finding a good one is high..

Rickj has had some cracking shots from his!!

Another vote for the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 from me - top notch performance at a great price.
