Hi, great looking forum this!!! Pointed in this direction from a fellow on AV Forums.

Relatively new to DSLRs but not to photography (still got an Olympus OM4 from a long time ago). Not long had the D90 and it seems a fabulous piece of kit! Got it with the 18-105mm which seems quite good as a walk about lens. I also purchased the 50mm f1.8 when I got it.

As I am in the UAE at the moment and lens prices seem OK I may look to pad out the kit with a 70-300 for wildlife etc. I was contemplating the Nikon VR which I think is an AF lens? Only thing I was wondering though is that as the D90 has an AF motor in the body, and I think the VR also has an AF motor, are you not paying for the AF motor needlessly twice? If so, is there another suitable Nikon 70-300? Might be barking up the the wrong tree here :cuckoo:

Finally, I am not sure whether to get the 35mm Nikon prime too or whether it might be overkill at the moment? Not sure if I will do too much indoor portrait stuff and as such I may just see if the NEED arises in the future. I just bought the SB400 flash which is a handy size and could always use that on the 18-105 if I needed more distance than the 50 allows indoors I suspect.

I figure that the 50, 18-105 and 70-300 will probably suit all my needs for the foreseeable future with the only proviso that I could add the 35 if needed (perhaps sooner rather than later) and POSSIBLY ditch the 18-105 and replace with a 16-85 in time?

Also planning to get a few Hoya filters for which Max.saver seems to be a good site?

Any thoughts appreciated.

The Nikon 70-300 VR's full designation is Nikon 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 G AF-S VR IF-ED.

This means that its definitely AF-S :D

You want AF-S for fast focusing, you don't want to be using the camera's screw drive - thats only there for backwards compatibility with Nikon's late 20th century kit :D

While you may well be paying for the AF motor twice, you're getting the VR and redesigned optics in the newer lens thrown in as well. The VR lens is far better optically than the older G type lens as well as being faster focussing and having VR.

I'm also thinking of buying the Nikon 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 G AF-S VR IF-ED.

Or should I get the Sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6 DG OS Lens? I don't have a macro lens so this might be an okay one to play around with some macro photography too. Or maybe not as it's only able to shoot at a maximum magnification of 1:2.

Any others worth considering?
