Hi guys

I'm getting a bit confused and can't seem to find the answer anywhere...I'm after a nifty fifty lens for my Nikon D90 crop sensor but getting confused as to which one I need. AF-S or AF? AF seems considerably cheaper. Can anyone help? Many thanks.

If your camera has a focus motor in the body then you can use the AF - if not then you need the AFS.

Other differences: the AFS focusses more quietly and is optically marginally better, but does not have an aperture ring if you like to adjust aperture manually.

Thanks. Yes, my camera does have a built in auto focus motor. There's a big difference in price between the two so I think I may just stick with the cheaper AF...especially if the difference is only marginal...

I've had both and still have the AF. IMO the AFS is very overpriced for the level of image quality it produces, and that neither lens is great, but there are times one can be useful.

Thanks. Forgot to ask, will the full frame AF lens work on my camera fine?

Hi

On the d90 both the 50mm f1.8 d and the 50mm f1.8afs will work fine.

If you a cheaper one go for the 50mm 1.8d. Also depends what you need the 50mm for, another lens to look at is the 35mm f1.8 dx.

Thanks. So is the 1.8D a full frame lens? Sorry, I'm confused by all this.

Yes.

The 35mm is the 50mm you want for your d90 ;)

If the OP wants a 'standard' lens then yes, I'd agree completely.

Personally I like shooting with a fast 50 on crop, and love the results from my Sony 50 1.4 on an a58 body - it's a nice short tele length, and good for portraits & landscapes.
