I started out with a Canon EOS 300X with the kit lens (28-90mm F4-5.6), then moved up to a Canon EOS 300D with the kit lens (18-55mm F3.5-5.6).

Along the way, I also collected the following lenses...

Canon Zoom lens EF 75-300mm F4-5.6
Canon Compact Macro lens EF 50mm F2.5

And, randomly...

Canon Zoom lens EF 28-80mm F3.5-5.6

I've also got a Canon Speedlite 420 EX.

I'd like some advice on where to go next. I'd like to move up from the 300D but want to stick with Canon, and would also like to continue to use the lenses I've got if they'd be compatible with a more advanced body.

Budget isn't huge - no more than £1000, and I would like to get something that will last for some time to come.

The types of photo's I mainly take a landscape, people and animals.

Thanks.

50D is probably the one to look at but you could look at a 40D and buy a nice lens with the rest. The 7D is just beyond your budget.

for the 7D its only an extra 200 but you got the top of the range before going full frame. But 50d is real good too at a lower price. Or eles not sure but I belive 60 D I had read once is in the pipe line if you can wait

Saying all this 40d is a good price and you can invest some money on better lens which at the end of the day is what really matters

If you are pretty happy with the handling and controls of your 300D you could consider going for a new camera body of similar style and handling rather than the slightly larger and slightly differently handling 50D or 7D.

The entry level 1000D or the higher specification 450D, 500D and 550D might suit you and if so you might have a little more money left over to spend on lenses than if you went for one of the larger camera bodies.

PS. I too have a 50mm f2.5, great aren't they?

Thanks for the advice - the 7D would be nice, but I do fancy getting some prime lenses, so if I looked at one of the other bodies, like the 50D / 500D, then I could probably afford to do this.

A trip to Jessops to see how they both look and feel in the flesh is in order!

And, yes, I too like my macro lens!

Not thought about the second hand route, have you any suggestions on where to look for second hand. I bought my 300D originally second hand from ebay but not sure about looking for a 5D on there

You really need to sort out lenses first. Everything except 50mm needs to go if quality is important at all! For non-action 40D and good glass can work well, otherwise a well-used 1D mk2 with proper glass (or new 7D for 2x more).

Absolutely, go see which body you prefer.

The 50D (and 40D) are slightly larger bodies than the 500D (and 450D), so that might make a difference when you hold them.

Depending on what your shooting the 40D (and 50D) are very good and would be well withn your budget, leaving a nice amount for some new (or 2nd hand) lenses. As said above the 50mm F1.8 (Kerso does them on here for around £75) is well regarded. Don't forget to look in the 'for sale' section on here, there can be some good buys around

Good luck with your search

if i was in exactly the same situation i would be a second hand 30D (around £250) or 40D (im guessing around £400) then i would buy a canon 50mm f1.8, a tamron 28-75mm f2.8 (or 17-50mm depending on focal length needed) and a nice tamron 90mm f2.8 macro to replace your current macro.
