Hi, me and a friend will be visiting London for the day at the end of the month but i am totally clueless as where to go. There sounds like there is just too much to cram into one day so was wondering could people share their best experience on a London day trip which was low cost, easy to get to and above all has some photographic interest :) If i can plan it all right it should be a very good day.

mmm.. that route seems to work really well and it also avoids most of the museums which we probably wouldn't want to visit during this visit. Thanks Sheep i will do a bit of research on the tinternet :)

Off the tourist beat I would strongly recommend Shepherds Bush market, with the old trains arriving over head and the unique stalls that are a bit of a throw back to the 70's if I am honest. I'm a brighton based chap these days but a very big piece of my heart remains in west London (and specifically at Loftus Road:eek:).
Have fun but be wise:suspect::thumbs:

Thanks for the advice J Gordon, my dad also recommended Shepherds Bush Market, he said it is an unusual part of modern London now :P

He was probably refering to the amount of ozzies living there

On a serious note I was in London last weekend. I stayed in a marbel arch hotel, booked through lastminute "secret hotels" feature (iirc £180 for 2 nites which aint too shabby for a 4* in that location ) saturday we walked down park lane to Buck palace to just miss changing of the gaurd  - imo not a great photo opp' place unless you like candid (nice gardens tho), walked down the mall onto whitehall (via trafalgar sq), past household cavelry (or is it the life gaurds ) at their gaurd posts ending up in Parliment sq, where you have of course big ben, Westminister Abbey, Houses of parliment.

Across the river to the eye - loads of street performers here. Keep going along the river where you will come accross a skate/bmx park (heard about that on another thread on here) I got a few "action" shots here. You could then continue along to "non wobbly bridge"/Globe and across the river to St Pauls - if you do you'll have ample choice of "refreshment houses" dotted along the south bank.

If you wanted to go to canary Wharf you could then jump on a tube here (st pauls) using central then DLR from bank.

Thats about the crunch of what I did - though you could get a lot more done as I started out late on sat morn and I took it slow. I was thinking about doing the london bus tour company where you can jump on and off their tour buses all day which stop at all the major attractions. £19pp  - we'd already got travel cards so decided against it but if you've not that sure where you are going in london then this maybe a good option - just make sure you get your moneys worth ;).

On a sunday morning, catch the folk 'shrimping' when the Thames tide goes out down near London Bridge, beyond Pudding Lane. It's hard to believe that some people are making a living that way amongst such oppulence.

blimey - london truely doesn't sleep does it! Thanks for all your advice folks, i will show my mate the info and we can decide on a route :) also we shall be stopping by at the Regent Street Apple Store to pick up my new Mac Mini 2ghz :) :) :) i've been waiting a long time for apple to finally update it and now its here and i have the money.

I'd recommend the O2 Express, runs from the Eye, up to what used to be the Dome ;) £6 single fair and worth every penny.

Don't bother with bus tours, just grab a Day travelcard and use buses (number 23 Liverpool Street to Ladbroke Grove goes through the Strand, Regent Street, Oxford Street etc. - quite handy).

Some advice:

1). Don't eat in any of the restaurants near Leicester Square - I have (in almost all of them) and find them at best overpriced and at worst, dangerous!

2). Take a bottle of water, it's getting VERY hot on the tube at the mo

3). Whilst London is a safe place overall during the day, do keep half an eye on what goodies you have on display - especially the natty little apple bag!

4). Look up! There are some AMAZING buildings in London, and some really cool sites if you raise your eye-level

5). Have fun. It's a chaotic, mad and sometimes unwelcoming city, but it's my home and I love it to bits!

Cheers,
James
