Hi all,

I got my first Macro lens a few weeks ago and it's great fun, I've taken photos of different things but with it being Winter obviously finding insects/critters and anything else similar for Macro is scarce. I remember years ago, when I'd walk to school on a frosty morning I'd see cobwebs and spiders etc. but I don't seem to find any in my back garden, the garden is very big but I still can't find any - so do I need to venture out and walk through forests etc. or should I wait for Spring?

In the other hemisphere? ;-)

I'm afraid this was a pure Canadian answer… where even
garden houses are dead frozen in winter. I just clicked that
the UK has has more temperate seasons (though we learn
in school that Canada has a moderate climat —where the
same day will start at -35°F, reach +27°F sometime in the
day and drop again to -42°F at night!).

Most insects die off over winter, leaving only eggs ready to hatch in spring. Of course some do hibernate such as certain species of butterfly and bee, which may fly during warm days.

I just lifted a flag stone at the back of our house and found four black widow spiders and dozens of nests.

Not nice.

Happy to be of service.
We looked at images of black widow bites. Those will keep you awake at night.
