what about the caingorms (is that spelt right?) -Ballater, Banchory, Balmorral etc - lovely scenery and plenty of amazing buildings/rivers/hills etc - and not that far - just shy of aberdeen.
 
Gary - I know in your OP you said you had done Edinburgh and surrounds. Have you checked out Aberdour?? We went there with family a couple of years ago and there is a stunning old church right on the river. Not to mention the views across the river?

Not a whole day trip out... but may be worth a pop over there?
