Guys,

Skye was awesome, and I still have a massive number of images to check from the weelend. However, I am already itching to get away somwhere, and I just haven't a clue where.

- Must be 4 hours or less drive.

- I would prefer to focus on developing my landscape technique (or lack of!)

- Good light would be cool (pray for me)

- The closer to EDI, the better - however, I want PROPER DRAMA.

I have the camper, and will stop and sleep ANYWHERE, so that side of it is covered.

Places I have already done, and am not quite ready to return to:

- Edinburgh and surrounding areas
- Glasgow
- Skye
- Mull
- Lindusfarne / Holy Island
- Bamburgh
- Alnwick

I do want to explore MORE of the highlands, but would not know where to start. Some of the hills between Sheildaig and Inverness look fandabby.

Lessons I have already learned from Skye. It is better to spend your time waiting on the light and obsessing over ONE SCENE, as opposed to rushing around trying to cram as many sights in as possible. This is a Holiday fun vs Photography struggle. I can hardly ask Claire to come and watch Elgol for two days straight, waiting for the sky and light to do something magic. This could turn into a very lonely hobby :D

I always got Jaco, Michael, Daz and a few others I guess :)

Ideas welcome.

Why not try North Yorkshire. Great coast and moorland
Hey if its good enough for Joe Cornish

Liverpool is just on the edge of 4hrs :D Go via the Lakes.

Thats doable. Can I park and sleep in my van outside your front door? You can then come read me a chapter from youe HDR book as I nod off! :)

Ha! The big bad sensor huffed and he puffed but he still couldn't fully capture the dynamic range of 12 o clock sun. The little piggy told the photographer to buy a Red camera with 13+ stops of dynamic range. Little Jack Horner who sat in the corner had a great deal on them. Modelling provided by Little Miss Moffat.

Damn, you are making me sleepy :)

Oooooh - red camera! :D

What about going touring around the north coast ? It would take quite some time (unless the roads are now better than when I went up that way) probably well outside the 4 hours though, but if you happy to sleep anywhere... There's some astonishing and rugged scenery that way. Go all the way round to Glasgow, the long way...

4 days, maybe :D That is a plan of mine, not the entire coast in one go, but eventually I would like to have seen it all. Anyone know the "total number of miles" around the Scottish Coast?

we did it in 2 days from Inverness to Glasgow, it wasn't particularly far in miles per se, just took ages to drive any distance (unless you were a local in an old worn out defender :D).

Glen Coe / Ben Nevis area? I've been round there and its stunning. I only have 2 photos hanging up in my room. One is Toronto and the other is Ben Nevis and the loch around Fort William. Plus you can take the lift up Ben Nevis for awesome views.

Impressive. How many hours driving do you feel you did?

Thanks mate, Glencoe is awesome. Two great suggestions :)

Gary.

Gary it was something like 16 hours in the 2 days, it felt like about 36 hours... :bang::bang: We'd gone to a wedding near Sterling and stayed up for some time afterwards.

Nah sorry, this was before I got into photography... I'm not even sure we took a camera with us. This was at least 12 years ago now.

Liverpool, they can take the wheels off motors very quietly while your sleeping, how will you get home :lol:

Im ok with that :) Just remember when Divorce comes up Im having nowt to do with it :) AS the many married toggers on here will warn you beware the wrath of the missus :P.

Assynt is on my radar for Q1 2009, suggest you look it up - some stunning scenery up that way but roads not ideal for your camperbus

A good lesson learned mate

Thank god no more rushing about I was getting dizzy :cuckoo:

Get your arse up to Cape Wrath / Durness / Tongue. Spectacular scenery and if you've got the time come back via the west coast route. Plenty of places to wild camp and plenty of reasonably priced B&B and walker's hotels.

Closer to home there's Killin / Falls of Dochart / Ben Lawers / Glen Lyon

You can get some really good ideas from here http://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/

Cheers mate. Glencoe tomorrow morning I think. I will do Tongue etc before the end of January.

The road to Kinlochourn, the starting place for the classic walk to Barrisdale.

It's a remote dead end road, takes about an hour from the main drag.

It's wild as wild can be, plenty of stag and great scenery and probably not see another car all day!

Though Kinlochourn is totally exposed to west wind and of course rain driven in by those west winds. I have been more soaked than ever before in this area!!

How to get there (nicked from a local site)
Head west along the A87 from Invergarry for 8km, then take the unclassified narrow road marked to Kinlochourn. Travel to the end of this road, which gets narrower the more west you proceed. Just before arriving at Kinlochourn, the road drops steeply and twists as it tries to avoid the river coming out of Loch Coire Shubh.

Why are you not ready to return to any of the above. Whilst the ability to travel and see new areas must be very tempting and I'd be keen myself, I think that if you are doing this for your photography then you should revisit these areas until you feel you have captured the best you possibly can. If you have already done this and the only improvements you think you could make are down to nature and light, then move on. Otherwise, correct what you didn't get right last time - that should push you to improve.

How about posting some old pics and asking how people would improve them... and offer self crit. When you have the answers, pack your kit, go take some shots, and come back showing us what you've done. :)

You have a very valid point, and I guess I am doing it to an extent - I was in Glencoe about 6 months ago...and I guess I should really look at those photos again before heading up...

Looking forward to it :)

Cheers mate :)

Leaving now! Your fault if the weather is pants :D

I've probably missed you, but I did map/directions for good photographic locations in Glencoe a while ago that could be useful.

If you ever decide to give Yorkshire (Dales) a go, give me a shout and I'll join up with you for a days shooting.

North Berwick - very near with the Bass Rock, could go out in a boat and get the coast as well.

Dundee with the Tay Bridges???

I stand corrected or beware the wrath of hubby. Mind with a fella woudnt be so bad he prob just gouch on the couch all weekend watching footy :)>unless he a togger too then you sorted.:)

Tomorrow morning, I have decided to keep it *relatively* local, as I am not hugely optimistic RE weather, and light. In the right conditions, the scenery will rival that of a Barren and dry desert mountain range. Think Nevada or Arizona, and you will have the idea. It takes a wee stretch of the imagination, mind.

I will post the results as always.
