Where can I find TomTom maps for Middle East / Saudi Arabia?

To cut a long story short; I mistakenly brought my TomTom (bought for me to use in UK) to Saudi Arabia. As my stay here is getting longer, I am doing a bit of desert exploration and need a good GPS.

I am trying to save a bit on expenses, as such would like to find a down-loadable map for my TomTom (freeware would be great, but am more than happy to pay for something that is good).

The alternative would be for me to buy another GPS; Garmin seems to be the most common here .. but I am not too keen on forking out the money, if I can just get the maps for my existing GPS!

I've looked into the Google-Earth option that comes with the iPhone .. but I am not too keen on that, as it requires an Internet connection .. besides, am not too keen on an iPhone. There is, also, the Nokia GPS which is a lot cheaper than the Garmin, but I have no idea how good / bad that is.

Any suggestions / links would be greatly appreciated ...

Already checked that .. they don't have it for Saudi Arabia! Was hoping may be a 3rd-party source ?!

Anyone  ?!?

I haven't come across any third party maps for the stand-alone Tom Toms. You may have better luck with a Garmin, and maybe getting local maps locally. The cheap option would be a cheap Garmin handheld navigator (not the car type) and the Garmin World Map cd. This will give you absolute minimum and basic navigation, of the point me in the direction of home type (provided the nav unit has a compass function), with the most major roads and cities and features. This cd can be bought here for around £35.

Thank you MisterE.

I am trying to avoid buying another GPS; since I have the TomTom, I was hoping to be able to just pick-up / buy the map and install that!

Failing that, if I have to buy a whole new GPS, there is the Garmin and Nokia which have all the cities and roads for Saudi Arabia .. but I am not too keen on a new GPS expense!

Thank you for the head's-up

You can't - they don't make one yet...
You'll have to buy a normal GPS and upload a street map of that - try Garmin e-Trex series - you can download maps of Iraq and Afghan for those - I've done so - they have major roads marked on them, but you do't get the turn-by-turn directions that you'd get with a dedicated driving satnav...

Arkady,

Following your threads / posts; I guess you're one of the most informed people in this part of the world  .. thank you for the head's-up on this.

Garmin, Nokia and iPhone GPS all have detailed roads and directions for Saudi Arabia; just as good as my TomTom was in UK, with the exception of traffic reports / updates. Of course, the iPhone is mainly a Google-Earth thing; but it is very detailed .. but requires Internet connection (not possible when I am in the middle of no-man's-land).

I guess I will have to fork-out for a Garmin; which I was not happy to do .. but necessity dictates

Again, thank you for the informed feedback :)
