It was mentioned on Springwatch last week that insect numbers have crashed. I have just driven 400 miles and my number plate is almost as clean as when I started. I remember that, not so long ago, it and the windscreen would be an obliteration of mashed and mangled insects.

Does anyone knowledgeable on such matters know what's going on?

There seem to be many attracted my windscreen, and if not cleaned off quick enough they turn into blobs of very hard stuff!

Hadn't seen so much as a fly in the last few weeks, then one of the hotter nights I leave the window open and wake up to what I imagined [in my hazy, groggy state at 4am!] was a drone outside the window - nope, just some odd looking fly with a very high pitched squeal, trapped inside, couldn't make his way out - it was yellow and black stripped , like a hovverfly but much smaller, thinner and noisier! I though maybe it's some form of mosquito so I went and got a tea-towel - got it in one. Karma today ... got a new hedge trimmer, decided to try it out on the worst section of the back yard, got eaten alive as I trimmed the ferns, I swear even a butterfly attacked me :ROFLMAO:

Was talking last night to a naturalist about this he explained to me that the biggest factor is intensive farming and the use of insecticides
i have noticed a big reduction in insects

must be said i am doing quite a few miles lately and yeah very little bug splatter

Even more noticeable when I've towed a caravan this year, since even the big black cover on the front of it has hardly any dead bugs on it. Even the dreaded midges are only just starting in NW Scotland, so that's one benefit at least. ;)

Midgies have been quiet here (Southern Scotland), not so many as I can remember from previous years. I've noticed plenty of damsels etc at my local pond though, tons of them.

Off topic, but what are those front covers actually for?

The article below ponders whether they are worth it or a waste of money, but the benefits are suggested as being
Advantages of Caravan Towing Covers

So the main benefit of a caravan towing cover should be fairly obvious. It should keep the front of your caravan clean while you’re on the road. Now, while you’re on fast A-roads and motorways that will be general grease, grim and oil washing up off the road surface during wet conditions. However, its often a different story when it comes to the last couple of miles to get to your site. Many caravan sites (including Horton Common) are in rural/semi-rural locations. Therefore, the main industry in the area is farming…you can see where I’m going with this. Therefore, the advantage of a towing cover is it can keep that ‘dirt’ off the front of your caravan. But obviously that benefit comes along with several compromises, more on that below in the disadvantages section.

The other potential advantage is protecting the front of your caravan from stone chips etc while towing. In fact, Dan and his wife in the video above are convinced that their towing cover stopped them from having a dent in their caravan or damaged window from road debris. I personally believe this should be classed as a ‘potential’ benefit or advantage of caravan towing covers.

Don’t expect caravan towing covers to perform miracles. If a large/heavy piece of road debris is bouncing along the road and hits the front of your caravan, even with a towing cover you should still expect some damage. However, the extent of the damage I think will vary depending on the towing cover you choose. Some are much more padded than others, hence they may take out some of that energy on impact. Potentially avoiding damage to the caravan at all, or just reducing the extent of the damage. So I do believe, and several of our guests also believe, that caravan towing covers provide some benefit/protection while towing.

Thanks, makes sense. I suppose that they really do help to prevent stone chips and road muck when being towed at excessive speeds by people who clearly don't have a trailer licence :exit:

Plenty of flies and mozzies where we are down in the garden of England. Plenty of ants, beetles and butterflies as well.
