I was at a football match a few weeks ago and this oldish bloke (older than me anyways) with a small camera started talking to me and asked me if I had made a will.... (At this point my nutter alarm went off) But he continued.. he knew someone at Preston sports museum who suggested that he included them in his will to have all his pictures when he dies..

My nutter alarm was still going off so I just nodded and moved away..

Weeks later I am thinking about it and it does raise the question..
Whats going to happen to your photographs/Pictures when you die

OK Lets skip the obvious... why would I care when I am dead...

I have a large library of football photographs from the last few years as well as other sports.. but mainly football.. Most where taken at games where i was the only photographer and therefore I am the only person with a record..

For me it would be a shame for all these to be lost to the world.. ie not available for view or records.. So I am going to take steps... Few ideas in my head what to do but not 100% decided.. and theres no rush.. I hope :)

So anyone else given this any thought or have any ideas?

If nothing else.. the question is different :)

And to Auntie Joyce I leave 25,000 digital files of men in shorts

I'm sure she'll be impressed:D

Everyone needs to have a will. You'd be mad not to have one.

Most clubs have archivists - or some old bloke with all their old memorobilia anyway. Get in touch with the relevant folk if you want to leave something to the clubs themselves - i.e. pics of an old ground etc.

I'm doing similar with a soccer team I followed in the mid 90s as I have some photos of their ground prior to redevelopment and all theirs from that period no longer exist. Nothing to do with me dying and everything to do with archivist getting in touch with me.

I have several of my photos mounted in the local pub :D

But James Natchway once said...
"I have been a witness, and these pictures are

my testimony. The events I have recorded should

not be forgotten and must not be repeated."

Liek you said yourself - why do you care. I certainly don't care what happens to my images when I'm gone. And if there's no will then I understand everything goes to spouse or next of kin. I don't have a problem with that :-)

Well, they have a value so I guess you could sign over copyright to a family member as part of your will. It might produce a steady income of some kind for that person. Or alternatively I guess they could sell the entire collection to someone if they so wished. At least your loved ones would see some benefit rather than none at all.

What happens in Scotland if there's no will ?

Its funny this should come up as my wife has just managed to get hold of her Great Uncle Bob's box of pictures and slides. He died a few years ago and another family member had them in the attic. Bob was a very keen amateur and had been taking pictures since the end of WWII. Photo's include the queen, spurs winning something in 1966 etc, I cant wait to have a proper trawl once she finishes scanning them all in.

It's only me that cares about my pics whilst I'm alive, so there will be one less who cares when I'm dead.

I`m going to force my family to sit through a slide show as part of my will.

Hell, they moan when I show them some now. That`ll teach `em!!

I will have changed the world by then with my far reaching social documentary photography. No more exploitation, war or famine.
