Having read Dean's post thought I would reply also.

Last Monday called the doctor out to my mum, who was in considereable pain, and he said she had a "pulled muscle" and gave her some pain killers.

Things got worse, and she got no better, and to cut a long story short on Saturday afternoon we had her rushed into hospital and she has got Pleurisy and pnuemonia :shake: and in a lot of pain now.

If only they had prescribed anti biotics and checked her more thoroughly on the Monday we would not have been in this same situation.

Not going to be allowed home at least till Saturday (if then) and then we have to provide around the clock care till she gets back on her feet which is not going to be a quick process.

that is shocking to say the least. i hope your mum gets better soon and i hope a strongley worded letter is onthe way to the first doctor.

My Mum was sent home from Grantham Hospital bunged up with kaolin to keep the diarrhea at bay for a few days.

GP said it was just something going round, but Mum had a further six months in hospital recovering from C. diff.

I dont remember but when I was 2 I put my leg in my Mums bike wheel - went to hospital and justbriused. A few days later still in pain it turned out it was broken!!

To be fair, doctors are human beings who will always make mistakes, and many illnesses have very similar symptoms so it can be tough to get it right first time. Not words of comfort if a loved one has been diagnosed but it will always happen. Luckily, they do get it right most of the time.

I was going to say much the same, that we are all human and all very fallible; from doctors with their years of expensive training and very good remuneration, down to the car mechanic who mis-diagnosed your car and the gawp who works at Jessops we all like to moan about!

Let them fail on their own families rather than make deliberate, lazy, life-threatening decisions.

This is why I never bother with the GP if I think there is genuinely something wrong with me I'd go to the hospital.

sorry to hear about your mum Nicki, mine went through something very similar a few years ago.... and even worse, they discharged her early...twice!!!! and each time she had to be rushed back in an ambulance.
I hope your mum makes a good recovery, but make sure they don't send her home too early - apart from extending the illness, they hate the insecurity of being shifted here and there.

my OH has just today been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis (sp?) at 28 after 5 years of constant g.p appointments, consultant appointments, tests, bloods, xrays etc etc.
The first doctor to see him all those years ago said "You can't have arthritis, it's impossible, you're too young." then proceeded to refer him to orthopaedics, 3/4 months later when the consult appointment came through, the consultant has a look over him (took 10 mins) and said "I cannot understand why you have been sent to me, this is quite obviously nothing remotely orthopaedic" , he then referred hito rhematology.

Consequently, for that reason ( and a few similar experiences) my OH and myself refuse to see that g.p anymore.
OH is contemplating making an appointment with him for the sole reason of pointing out his obvious errors and requesting an apology for the "hypocondriac" note that this g.p stuck on his notes!

Sorry to hear that.

But the pulled muscle could likely have caused the pleurisy.

If you are in pain and can't breathe deeply enough to fill your lungs fully then it can result in an infection.

Thank you all, she is now on Morphine and a bit more comfy, we have to get her moving around a bit so everything disperses.

Very tiring though up and down to hospital, work house etc, god know what my camera looks like have not seen it for a while

Still got to get her better and round the clock care when she comes home, I will be looking forwad to my holiday in September.

You think they misdiagnose on purpose

In 1985 my mother had difficulty breathing , the doctor came out and diagnosed an athsma Sp attack

Turns out she had a collapsed lung, she was taken to the hospital some 2 hours later, operated on but had a weak heart and didn't make it through the operation , her heart stopped for four minutes , she died 10 days later, she was 49

I don't blame the doctor for what happened, he made a decision based on experience and what he saw but underestimated the severity of the problem

Doctors do a good job, we should count ourselves lucky there's someone we can call on at no direct cost 24/7

Everybody makes mistakes, for some the consequences are massive but as long as the doctor isn't drunk or deliberately negligent I can't say a bad word against them

Great post!

It's of no comfort when you're the unfortunate recipient of a misdiagnosis (I've been there myself) but medical professionals make many life and death decisions every day, and frankly I'm surprised they don't make more frequent mistakes! The work they do deserves nothing but praise in my opinion and experience!
