I have an up coming shoot of groups of dancers and want to get them all in on one background. I have looked at paper and stapling it to wall but its not gonna work in all locations, so I am looking for a stand alone solution Ideally 4m wide minimum but 6 would be a bonus, I need to use a backdrop that I can curve too so people can stand on and background rises seamless. So what are you using? and this needs to be portable to take to various events.

Looked at the Lastolite Panoramic but its max is 4m and it doesnt stand alone without bending in the outside 1m panel on both sides! so not sure its the way to go.

Any help or pointers gratefully received

Not quite the solution you wanted, but it may help if you cant get what you want. I have assisted on a shoot with about 16-20 dancers (child and youth performers). The photographer used 3 backdrop stands and 2 horizontal poles to get enough width and used a backdrop of 10x20 feet, but mounted sideways to get 20 feet wide and 10 high (he had put an extra seem into the cloth himself, to run the poles through. When mounted the bottom of the cloth just brushed the floor. As the floor was decent, he just used that as part of the image and matched a backdrop to it that did not clash with the colour.

If a floor matching the backdrop was required, I would have thought a 2nd cloth taped to the floor might do, and take out the connecting area in photoshop. If there are enough dancers and they are arrayed close enough to each other there may not be much work to do on that.

Cheers Jay, just thinking this myself. Looking at a second calumet heavy duty cross pole maybe? Thanks for reply!

I made my own 6m wide backdrop using aluminium scaffold pole, cut into 2m lengths, (for portability) then rejoined when on location.

As long as you use heavy duty stands it will take a 6m x 3m cotton black backdrop with very little bend in th middle, but you can always use a third stand if you needed it. As Jay said either use the existing floor or a second cloth on the floor.

Treemean, how did you connect the poles on site?

The CALUMET heavy duty backdrop kit with a couple of extra sections

Two 3 X 8M Muslin backdrops now professionally joined with bespoke tabs

An extra stand in the middle to support the weight and hey presto a 6m wide by 4m high with a 4m on the floor gave me a massive white backdrop - 5 studio lights and some great group shots had

I now have a vinyl for the singles at 3m by 8m.......

Muslin. I use 50 yard sections 20 feet wide. It comes in colors so you can do chroma key easily.
