What's the best way to start off with HDR?

No
My camera doesn't support a HDR function so I'll need to do it in PP. I just downloaded a program that did it but:
a, there is a hidden fee I didn't know about when I downloaded it
b, the trial version leaves watermarks all over the photo, so the demo is effectively useless

So what is the best software to use for HDR? I know one way to do it is to take different exposures of the same shot and then combine them into one photo. What good (free) software is there to do this? Any other alternatives?

Try Dynamic photo HDR, I think the trial version does add a watermark but only in one corner if memory serves me right. The later versions of photoshop have a hdr function as well.
Pete MC on this site has some great tutorials etc, I'm sure he could give you a lot more advice than I can.

Not sure what you mean when you say your camera does not support HDR, i don't know any camera that does, unless you are refering to RAW or Bracketing.
If your camera does have a raw function then you can use this to open up in Photoshop, from there process and save two jpgs or tiffs at different exposure levels, after which you will need something like Photomatix this is the software you can make your HDRs. Or indeed use Bracketing on your camera and open up in Photomatix.
But of course the trial version will as all, will show water marks, the whole idea for you to purchase.

I use and have had good success with Photomatix, far better than that of which i have in my Photoshop CS2..

I use Photomatix

there are 2 0r 3 way, to get files for HDR

Bracketing jpg
Bracketing Raw
1 raw file processed in a raw editor as different exposures saved as Tiffs

Photomatix Pro. Dead easy to use.

Personally I don't bother with HDR any more, the results are always cartoonish to my eye. Can be fun to mess around with though.

Does that mean you have a copy of photomatix pro for sale?:D

I think Photomatix and Dynamic Photo HDR are very easy and straightforward programmes to use. I have Dynamic Photo HDR and you can use it for multiple or single RAW or JPEG files.

Hi
any chance we can see an image edited with the software spoken about
